Riding Spots / Re: Northern Illinois Riders
« on: January 20, 2011, 07:17:46 PM »
They roped off the trails that went through the woods on the North side?  That does suck.  Those were the only trails that weren't cut and turned into a parking lot by the lazy riders. ..   seriously, when a 5 mile (if that) trail is too far and they have to duck in and out of it and cut across everything in order to not ride, why do they even bother in the first place.

I guess I'll stop my rant...

On another note, I'm not against paying some membership dues/fees if the riding is good. ..   I'm curious to learn more about RRR.

I'm familiar with Forreston.  I have a sister-in-law from Forreston.

My wife went to school at Macomb.  WIU is a nice school.

I haven't rode Rocky Glen for a couple years, but was quite unimpressed with it last time I was out there.

It's also been a couple years since I rode Brush Ridge. ..  but I do like that place. ..  lots of topography.

I've never been to Fox Valley, though I've heard of it. ..   my brother lives near there and always chooses to ride at "The Cliffs" in Marseilles instead. ..   "The Cliffs" is not my favorite as the ground is all hard pack clay and there's huge mud ruts from the Jeeps and 4x4 quads all over the place...

I've never heard of forestcityriders or rockriver riders before. ..   are those off-road riding spots or tracks?

I ended up deciding to leave the bike stock size and cylinder and sent my OEM cylinder off for replating, welding to widen the exhaust bridge by 3mm and match grinding of the powervalves.  Can't wait to get it back!!

Technical / 2001 yz125 riddle
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:14:55 AM »
To be clear, this isn't a thread of me asking for advice, since I have figured out the issue (and I will tell. ..  after a few guesses for fun). ..   just curious if anyone would actually guess the problem with my 01 yz125.

When I went to test ride the bike, I had some trouble getting the bike to start.  The owner indicated that I shouldn't crack the throttle AT ALL during the kick stroke (I have a habit of blipping the throttle just a little bit near the bottom of the kick.)

With his advice, it started and blipping the throttle would keep it running.  I took it for the test ride and it SCREAMED down the street, but bogged and died when I let it get back near idle.  I figured that the jetting was off and I'd get it straightened out once I got the bike home.

At home, I'm adjusting the air fuel screw and the pilot jet. ..  I end up chainging the pilot jet from a 25 to a 27.5 to a 30 to a 35, and there's really no noticeable difference. ..  on any of these jets it would run the closest to correct with the air fuel screw turned almost all the way in.

I went through the electric system and checked everything out. .  all measured within spec.

Thinking that the pilot circuit could be plugged, I did a complete disassembly on the carb and cleaned that circuit out fully.  No change. The bike still requires the same starting procedure and acts very lean from idle to mid-throttle, but runs great above that.

Anybody else on here from N. Illinois or S. Wisconsin?

I live near Rockford, IL and am always looking for places to ride (offroad that is. .  I'm not much of a jumper so I avoid the MX tracks). ..   though I must not be very good at it since I pretty much have to trailer up and drive to Michigan to hit decent single track trails.

I have raced my trx250R two-stroke quad (and am contemplating entering with my RM250 bike) in the WFO hare scramble series run out of the quad cities.    www.wfopromotions.com   their tracks are mostly farmer's land that gets run for a harescramble once or twice per year, but isn't rode on otherwise.  Tons of fun!!

Looking at your signature line, I think you need to get the son a trx250R. ..   so he can at least be a two-stoke "quad turd" (your words)   :P

More ATVs are sold in North America then motorcycles. They are a cash cow for the manufacturers.

Absolutely true. ..   Manufacturers sell ATV's for significantly more $$ than bikes, but do no where near the R&D on them.

For example, since putting out the trx450r in late 2004, Honda has only updated it once (in 2006, they gave it a toned down version of the '05 crf450 motor, changed some geometry slightly, and added an option for electric start) and has rested on their laurels since. . .. just raking in the $$$

Yamaha left the banshee and blaster alone for 15+ years and sold them like hotcakes the whole time.

That's pretty much the definition of "cash cow"

I know the exact crowd that you're talking about.. ..

A lot of the problem with quads is that the initial skill investment to move one from point A to point B is ZERO skill vs. some balance and agility that is needed to get a bike from the same point.  This scares most of the irresponsible recreating public away from bikes. ..  but not quads.

I will contend that to ride a quad at a high level takes a multitude of skills and strenghts that is very comparable to the bikes (though it's just "different". ..  so they really can't be quantitatively compared.)  but a VERY small % of quad riders are ever serious enough about it to lean these skills.  So many just want to go fast in a straight line or find a mud hole to dig up.  I can't even count the number of times I've seen other quads unload in the same parking lot as me and get all ready to ride down the road. ..   not the trail.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get to is that my riding buddies and I always felt like we were completely against the grain with other riders. ..  that is until we stumbled into the world of dirt bikes.  Now we're unloading in the parking lots for the single track stuff and everyone else that shows up is there to ride the trail as well. . . not to screw around in the parking lot or run down the fire roads.  I've found my home  ;D

I'm starting to get real excited for this weeks SX. ..   though I still haven't had enough initiative to watch the recording from last Sat. .. was just such a dissappointment for there not to be a two-stroke in there!!

In any case, Best of luck to Cedric!!

I once had the opportunity to ride a heavily modified Lt250R Suzuki quad. It was extremely fast and pulled like crazy to the left,to go straight ahead you had to steer to the right! :o

Sounds like the lt either had the tie rods adjusted wrong, had a bent frame or both.

The round tube frames (which almost all new sport racing quads have, and the LT250R's had) bend to the side very easily when hitting stumps or trees with the front wheels.

The old honda 250R's had a rectangular tube frame.  That design was a little bit heavier, but allowed the chassis to be much more rigid (which can also lead to lots of frame cracks) and durable against bends.

I've seen a product at the annual Dealer Expo's that's made just for this.  It was called "Mud OFF" and was a specfic type of foam that had almost no weight and wouldn't allow the mud to stick to it. ..  therefore keeping the bike from ever accumulating.

Here's a link to their site:

I've been having really good luck running Pro Taper X-ring chains on my bikes.  I haven't had to replace any of them yet . . and the stretching has been very minimal.
