Technical / 86 yz 250 carb
« on: February 24, 2010, 03:53:23 PM »
i just put a new vm 38mm carb on my 86 yz 250. every thing inside is 1 step leaner than the stock carb (main, needle, ect.). it has a lever choke on it and i dont know what position the lever has to be in for the choke to be on. i started it with the lever down which i think is the choke on and it ran fine and every time i pulled it up it bogged and wanted to die. am i correct in assuming that it is running to lean? i have the old carb and can change out every thing except the slide and needle.

if you are like me and dont want political debates and just answers i would use the trial and error method. find out what works best for you.  every one has their favorite brand and weight but you have to work with what you can get witch is going to be less and less because we are a dying breed. motorcycle shops around where i live dont even carry pre mix so i have to mail order every thing.

General Two Stroke Talk / huge what if?
« on: January 08, 2010, 10:13:44 PM »
The manufactures wont do it but what if they made a 450 two stoke to compete with the 450 four strokes? I have ridden three 4 strokes (09kx450f, 06yz250f and an 009 crf 250) in my life and in my opinion their is no comparison to a two stroke. this is why i own only two strokes, but what if?
I have 2 500's, 3 250's, and 1, 125. i ride all over the east coast currently in sc, but i see nothing but two strokes at the tracks? when i asked the 450 rider if he wanted to ride a two stroke he seemed intimidated? whats the deal? are they so used to the laziness of a four stroke that they cant ride a two stroke!

Technical / Re: plating or sleeving?
« on: December 07, 2009, 07:39:23 PM »
thanks for the input. it was plated when new. money is always a factor and plating sounds cheaper in the long run. both of my 86 yz's are sleeved but i bought them that way. dont have any heat issues with them. the 92 has never been sleeved or replated. i bought off a guy at the track after he blew his head gasket. only paid $300 for it. has new tires new bars and pro action suspension so i thought it was worth it. split the cases and every thing else looks to be in good working condition just needs cylinder fixed and piston and rings.

Technical / plating or sleeving?

my 92 yz250 has a tore up cylinder. not so bad that it cant be replated but i was wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are for both plating and getting a new sleeve. any input would help.

just took a picture of my 86 YZ250. waiting on a carb. only paid $20 for it. invested a little over $1000 so far. did most of the work myself. this bike was frustrating to fix. kept on jumping into gear from neutral. ended up being the shift drum. i let it sit for the last 8 months but after the holidays my wife says i can finish it. my wife actually bought me the CR500 while i was deployed to iraq as a welcome home present. also a pic of my 01 YZ250 in its current state.
