What james Stewart said in that interview also seems bull shit to me. Certainly when he said he almost got beaten by a 450 when he was riding the 250 2 stroke. Come on james noone believes this.

If you recall. he also got beat when he went to the 450.  He was able to beat everyone except one person while on the 250...  The GOAT was just better.  In my opinion the bike didn't make that big of a difference...

I don't think you could have gone wrong with either one... (TM or GasGas) both are quality steeds.

"Whereas a 2t feels like you are making no power until you get to the power band at which point it feels like someone has flipped a switch to ignite a rocket ship. Very exciting but can be difficult to control."

I guess they never heard of Maico before.

Based on that comment, I question if the writer actually rode the AF500. A 500 is really smooth, yes it has a "hit", but its pretty much power right off idle until you can't take it anymore.  A properly jetted 500 is easier to ride than most people think.  Yes they should be ridden with respect, as with that much horsepower at the snap of the throttle you can get into some trouble. A 500 is a bike you ride a gear high and let the torque of the engine do the work.

It is sad that Yamaha the one that truely started the thumper revolution, is the only Japenase MFG the still sells a smoker in the US.  Suzuki and Kawi still produce smokers, but do not import into the US.  Honda has dropped the smoker completely. If the AMA ever get of its arse and corrects a huge injustace and eliminate the displacement ruling, the exhaust note at the tracks would really be different....

I have a friend who's considering getting a 250SX, though he wants an '80s Husky more.  The main advantage is financing, apparently, even though the KTM is more than twice as expensive.  If he does decide to get the KTM over the Husky, though, it sounds like they might not even have one for him.  Crazy.

The 250SX is a very popular machine.  It come standard with many of the aftermarket goodies that most of us would purchase in the near future, (none of us leave our bikes stock).  If his local dealer does not have one in stock, they may be able to locate one for him, or he can search other dealers and have it shipped to him.

Technical / Re: ATF as gearbox oil?
« on: April 06, 2010, 05:03:09 AM »
Tranny oil in a smoker is a personal decision...  I've run ATF for many years.  I do change the oil frequently as its cheap and easy to change.  I've never had a problem running ATF.

I encourage all members to repack your silencer often. The packing was only 8$. If people start realizing how much quieter two strokes are than four strokes they are that much more likely to be on top.

I usually repack my silencer every winter during my regular maintenance schedule.  But this year I spent many hours rebuilding my son's quad, and forgot about the silencer.  :o  It's next on my list, thanks for the reminder.

The reason many of us ride / race is for the grin  ;D factor....  the piggy 4 strokes took that away, and made many riders lazy and lighter in the wallet  :o ....  I too see in my area 2 strokes making their presence known.  I'm more off-road, GNCC / Enduro riding, but in this type of racing, smokers are also increasing in numbers.  :D :D

« on: April 02, 2010, 06:55:09 AM »
I have to say my Honda 74 CR250M, yes the old Elsiniore....  I started on that bike when I was 12...  I had a 125, but the 250 was sooo much more fun.  I got it when it was new (yes in 74), and sold it in 2006.  Many fond memories of that bike...  This picture was taken in 2006.

Next would be the 99 KX 250.

Last but not least... my current ride a 2000 KTM 300 EXC
