Technical / Re: Do I need race fuel?
« on: October 06, 2011, 02:22:56 PM »
If race fuel is not available in your area you can run 100LL from you local airport.
I run it in my YZ and it's about 5.80$ gal
no pinging here..

Technical / Re: How to make a 2007 rm 250 less powerful for enduro? HELP
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:38:54 PM »
A  flywheel wt will not reduce the power, but it will spread and smooth it out. All the power will still be there, just not all at once.
I use a 13 oz on my yz. The easiest way to reduce the power is to lower the compression and retard the timing. Some bikes you can stack 2 base gaskets between the jug and the cases to reduce the compression. retarding the timing should not be that tough do a google search for how to.
I would just put the flywheel wt on a ride it much more. Your dad will get more comfortable on it in time.

I think you may need to re read the article, the stock bike made 50  hp, the pipe didnt add any hp to this peak, however it allowed it to make 7 hp more

I think they blow up because of the misconception that they must be tuned to the extreme ragged edge to be competitive with 450s.
A modified smoker that is both fast and reliable would be on par hp wise with a ktm 350f and they have proven competitive, Mike Alessi won a national on one last year.

Are you a logger in Oregon?
Looking at the pics at the top of the post it looks like southern ore.

The YZ's are as modern as any 2t out there right now but the plastic keeps them looking dated.

The 2012 ktm 250  puts out about 3-4 horses more than the frozen in 2000  "2012" yz 250
seems more than plastics have been getting updates over the last 12 years,

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: my YZ250 finaly has some low end grunt.
« on: August 13, 2011, 03:15:54 PM »
got a few hours on the bike now and still can't believe the difference having the valves work right makes.
Now it reminds me of my old piston port OSSA on the bottom. FUN FUN

I know that a YZ 250 is down on HP vs the 450 but why everyone who tries to race a national on one thinks they have to tune it on the very ragged edge to compete.
You can't win if you don't finish.

General Two Stroke Talk / my YZ250 finaly has some low end grunt.
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:21:23 AM »
Early this spring I picked up a clean 05 yz, the guy I bought it from had recepts from his local yam dealer showing the top end was rebuilt just a few weeks before.  The bike had good compression and ran strong. I had been riding an xr 400 so the yz felt like a beast. I rode it through the summer.
Raced in 5 local woods races. loved the bike but it always seemed kinda soft on the bottom. t weeks ago i got a chance to ride a buddys yz125 and it had more grunt and low end than my 250. hmmm. I figured my rings were shot as I guessed I had about 80 hours on the top end.
Pulled it apart and the piston and rings were nearly in spec, bore looked good. Then I looked at the POWER VALVES, the guy at the dealer had installed the 2 valves for the side booster ports BACKWARDS with the slot facing inside. This held them in the open position and bound them up in the cams that operate them effectively locking them in the full open position. Put the valves in the correct way and got them to operate correctly, installed the fresh Wiseco. After a proper break-in, WOW its like a whole different bike.
Check a used bike out real close.

General Two Stroke Talk / Talent trumps all else?
« on: June 27, 2011, 05:28:50 PM »
Just a hypothetical, if Reed, Dungy, and Villipoto were all racing 250 2 strokes in the 450 class would they still be sitting atop the points? Does their talent get them to the front more than the slight advantage in hp and torque? Nothing against Jeff Gibson but does he finish any better when riding a 450?
Until a top 5 level racer shows up on a 250 2 stroke will we really see what is possible.
I think that Reed on a YZ250 would still finish top 3.  That will never happen though cause the top guys will never be allowed to do that.  Too bad that we never got to see Cedric Soubeyras, he might have had the talent to scare someone.
