Compression is low, you should see a lot more then 125PSI with a fresh engine.

Type 55 would be 44mm correct? Might be overkill.
I own an 83 490 as well as newer Maicos and I'd personally stick with the Bing, good mileage and less sensitivity to elevation changes.

Correct. CDI modules typically can't be checked "on the bench". Does the bike run different cold vs hot and is the sparkplug cap a resistor style (have you checked it with a meter)? How are the crank seals and no obstructions in the exhaust (found a rag more then once)?

I was out the entire afternoon (100+ kms) scouting out an area for a course I'm laying out. The ride involved lots of grassy meadows and I think every mother hare in the area gave birth in the last few days. There were baby bunnies hopping everywhere! Lots of bears too. One connector trail had not one but two bruins on it.

Dr. Werner Von Braun (Nazi scientist) designed the Saturn 5 rocket that put America on the moon.
The Nazi centre for rocket research was initially based in Peenemunde on the Baltic coast in northern Germany (not far from where my father was born). A young scientist involved with this program, a Walter Kaaden, would later take principles involved in the creation of V2 rockets and apply them to 2T engine design at the MZ plant in East Germany. These technologies would later filter out to the West and give us the modern 2T offroad engine.

Right hand drive isn't that much of an issue.
AF conversions are nice but they are a "Dime a dozen". I personally would be inclined to build something more creative along the lines of a big bore KTM motor in a modern KTM f chassis.
