General Two Stroke Talk / Re: fuel injected TM 2t
« on: November 18, 2010, 12:39:55 PM »
What ever gets the 2-stroke back in business here is all I want. Whatever the enviros happy, I guess. Hopefully TM won't screw up their bikes like Honda did to the 05-07 2-strokes. I'm sure they won't, but...

Honda didn't screw up the 05-07s, they improved them over the 02-04 (and by quite a bit)... But Honda had already planned for the 2 strokes to be obsolete with the introduction of their 450 in 2002. They left a lot on the table, so sad they didn't finish as there was (and is) so much potential in their case reed motors.

Maybe TM will introduce a programmable valve so you can tune it like you do on the KTMs with the springs on their mechanical PV... That'd be nice. Throw that in with EFI or DI and it'd be beyond sweet.

Just thought I'd throw this out there....

Test rode a 350-SXF today... Was an absolute blast, what's funny though it reminds me of a heavy 2 stroke... You really have to wring it just as hard as the 250Fs/ 2 strokes to get anything out of it, can't really ride it like a 450 (something that it was claimed you could do with it) though. All the power it in the top, but I suppose you could lug it around (didn't do it). I was on the limiter probably as much as I was riding the 250Fs.

They really should move the 450s to 350s. So much more fun to ride (and easier to ride faster than a 450), and on par I think with the 250 2 strokes (much more so than the 450s). Too bad that it'll be as rebuild prone as the 250Fs though.

Didn't they fight 2 strokes in the 60's-70's as well?

Yep.

Pretty much until the end really. Sad too, they produced some of the best 2 strokes out there.

Well, sadly the electric bike will get treated like any other dirtbike when it comes to banning it from riding areas and such. They might not make a lot of noise, but they'll kick up a lot of dust, and contribute to soil erosion and all that wonderful jazz.

Plus, I'm sure people will hit the angle of it being so quiet it's a danger to others on trails, etc... They'll find something, and this green tech will be just as evil as the rest of the dirtbikes.

The reason why people complain that the YZ's r not updated/ old technology is because Yamaha has New updates from their 4 strokes that they could put on the YZ's without modifying but chose not too.

Examples:
-Revalved/ lighten suspension
-Improved levers/ perch
-New Triple clamps
-Lighten axles and hubs
-New hydro-form swing arm
-New linkage
-Bigger Foot pegs

That's just a few I could think of, I'm sure there is more that could be easily machined to work. Darn Yamaha!

Off topic:
Was just thinking....If I was a billionaire like Gates ;). I would give a couple million to Suzuki to have them produce a all new Rm250 and Rm150. hehehe

But I would have some requirements:
-Steel frame
-hydralic clutch
-brembo brakes w/oversize wave rotors
-Carburetor (works great, why change it to something more complicated?)
-New plastics
-Completely new motor
-4T style shrouds
-Yamaha style hydro swing arm
-Billet triple clamps
-1 1/8 bars
-$6500 max MSRP =)

awww a man can only dream.....

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. A reworked motor wouldn't hurt either to pump out a bit more power stock.

Edit: Also a better transmission.

I've given up all hope on Yamaha doing anything to their 2 stroke lineup beyond BNGs. I'll be surprised if they keep them around much longer with how bad bike sales are doing right now.

In the latest MXA they mentioned KTM has direct injection for 2 strokes right now but will not release them until the market picks up.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: im off to glen helen.....
« on: October 04, 2010, 10:44:04 PM »
well im back........ what a freaking long drive. drove through the night friday just to get 2 hours of sleep saturday morning in front of the gate. woke up to the lovely sound of of my buddy honking at me as he pulled in. haha. well what can i say, glen helen is amazing, every time i go down there it is a great time. just sitting on that gate is awesome, the talladega corner after the start, going up mt st helen is always a rush. so to break it down i went 7-7 on day one, i had nothing to offer i could barely walk i was so tired. but day 2 was way better i went 6-5 and beat both of my buddies that beat me day 1. finshed 6 overall. day one the track was super sloppy in the am and with the wind it dried out and got BEAT in the afternoon. day 2 was a different story the track was tacky all day, not sure what why it was so different but it was great. so let me just say this, 450's have there place, and glen helen is it. i got my a-- handed to me going up those hills and the long straights and the nasty bumpy corners etc... sloppy in the am dry in afternoon all = 450. sorry dont jump on me just hear me out. i did beat out a few guys and i was the only 250 in my class and the only 2t, even though there was a ton of 2t in other classes. but check this out, my buddy had issues with his bike before the last moto and had to ride his 250f in moto 4, he had been pulling me all weekend until moto 4. he had nothing for me on that 250f compared to my yz. so the proof is on the track, 250 2t against a 450 on a fast hilly nasty track = NOT FAIR, 250f vrs 250 2t = not fair, i think this really shows that our petition for 150-300 2t's is on track to being, well, fair.

Back before they went to the GP layout they have now (90 degree turns with no runup for the hill climbs, etc...) the track was fairly neutral (in fact I did far better on it), now it's a pure 4 stroke layout. Sad really, but such is life.

Sounds like you had fun though :)

Kind of funny actually, I'm sure this is why the AMA is a little reluctant to approve the rule change.

Only one of the PRO test riders (FMF guy long hair don't remember his name) disliked the 150SX, then again he got spanked on during both timed runs on each bike (and spanked hard). Most others loved it, the novices (Pete Peterson, my little brother and some other kid) leaned towards the 4 stroke @ 395 but loved the 150SX @ Piru.

Honestly, the 150SX is geared more towards advanced / pro riders, and it showed during the testing (they absolutely railed on it).

Glad for him. Definite success. Something to pad the resume with for sure.

For sure man, thanks again for setting this all up :)

That 150SX was spanking the 250F int the hands of the pros... Fun as heck to watch.

I believe it was - Danny Guillen.

That is correct. :)

Picture of him is one I took as well, so my photography was kind of published :p He's also in another pic racing against Pete Peterson.

I hope you recover fast! I'm stuck sitting around with an open fracture on my tibia (compound fracture FTW). I should be good to go pretty soon, so damned bored!

Non-Moto / Re: You stay much cleaner on a Jet Ski
« on: August 11, 2010, 12:26:59 PM »
Man, I thought vintage bikes were unpopular with the general public.  But from what I've been reading, the environmental types want the vintage PWCs to just be wiped of the face of the planet.  In 20 years, the manufacturers managed to cut emissions on those things by 70%, but the sentiment out there was still negative because of all the older models that were dirtying up the world!  At Lake Tahoe, if you want to run something pre-2006, chances are it won't meet the standards.  2006!

Although, I have heard many a story of hot days on the Willamette River where the two-stroke boats and two-stroke skis were all over the place, and by sunset there was a very noticeable blue fog hugging the water.  No wonder people got so blood-thirsty about it!

Nope, people are pretty anti 2 stroke when it comes to PWCs... Which makes it all the more fun when I ride mine and stomp on the newer skis... (Gotta love the new nanny crap they put on the new 4 stroke skis, and the ~65-70mph limit they come with stock).

I don't like 4 stroke MX bikes because they're boring, but 4 stroke PWCs are stupid boring... Beyond stupid boring in fact (almost impossible to whip them into 360s, or turn sharp at all (they'll cut power and use water brake setups to slow the turn or stop the 360), can't really jump them (too damn heavy) and on the FI ones (especially the sea doos) they break down a hell of a lot and cost quite a bit to repair. No gracias.

Non-Moto / Re: Nobody rides 2 strokes except for goons
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:21:24 PM »
I'd rather be a goon than a lemming...

lol... Most of the goons I see are on the 4 strokes :p Most all of them have more money than riding skills and go for a few laps (really awkward laps) and sit around watching most everyone else ride. Good old professional practicers.
