General Two Stroke Talk / 500 thoughts
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:41:40 PM »
If you REALLY want to make everyone mad, you could use an air-cooled engine.  I've heard better things about an '83 490 Maico than I have about CR500 or KX500, which is really all I can say as I haven't ridden them myself.  If you want something less exotic (but weirdly, harder to find parts for) you could get a CR480 or YZ490.  I think Super Hunky had some kind of plan to make a bike like this at one point, but I'm not sure if it ever happened.

Advantages of air-cooled:
- Looks bad-ass (although it would be weird with a modern-styled bike)
- No water pump, hoses, or radiators to fail or leak
- Lower center of gravity and slightly lighter overall weight
- Bike is narrower in front slightly
- The looks on 450F riders' faces after you beat them

finding a modern chassis to put a RH drive motor into could be a challenge.

Disadvantages of air-cooled:
- Parts availability may be an issue if you deviate from the cult-following models
- Cooling isn't as effective
- Potentially louder
- Possible geometric issues, depending on how big your motor (Maicos have BIG fins) and how strangely-shaped your frame is
- The looks on 450F riders' faces before you beat them

General Two Stroke Talk / Need owner reviews of KTM 250sx
« on: June 13, 2013, 04:06:38 PM »
I have a 12 250SX.  great engine and superb handling, suspension did not make me happy.  I put on an Ohlins TTX shock and took the Showa A kit front end off one of my Hondas and stuck it on there and now the suspension is sweet.  I put a PC silencer on the stock Ktm pipe, put in the red powervalve spring, rejetted and used the NECJ needle and love the power characteristics.   does have a bit of hit in the midrange but I like that.

every 4 stroke guy falls back on the "faster lap times, easier to ride, less tiring" rationale.  When did MX become about less tiring, easier to ride?  As far as faster lap times, I heard that argument when the 250 class took over from the 500 class.

The 500 class was not about doing faster laps than 250's, it was about having the skill, fitness and stamina to control the beast for 40 minutes.

General Two Stroke Talk / JD Jetting...any reviews?
« on: December 10, 2012, 09:38:31 PM »
all your really getting for your money is a needle as the pilots and mains are standard items most of us have already.   If you can use the Keihin needle chart it isn't that hard to jet correctly.

General Two Stroke Talk / Thoughts on a 2003 Cr 125
« on: October 02, 2012, 10:26:45 PM »
powervalve mod, airstriker carb, 07 airbox boot, airbox vents, 134 mod with porting.  handling is razor sharp.  this bike can be made to romp, takes a little commitment.  turns inside my son's 05 yz125 easily.

General Two Stroke Talk / wish bone for service honda cr500?
« on: September 30, 2012, 04:21:01 PM »
my AF is in an 03 CR125 chassis.  I have ridden them with the 4 stroke chassis and the gen 3 250 2 stroke chassis and I feel the 125 is a better handling package.  It is a lot more work to mod though.

General Two Stroke Talk / 2013 250sx tranny issues
« on: September 17, 2012, 03:26:31 PM »
I have the 12 model with a fair amount of hours on it and no problems.  On a slightly older model KTM I had the same problem, stuck in 2nd gear.  I missed a shift and banged it into gear, chipping a small pc off of a gear.  the small pc ended up embedded in the aluminum shift drum causing the shift fork to jam.  dug the pc of steel out of the drum, sanded the imperfection and put it all back together(with the chipped gear) and it ran great for years.

I don't think break in is an issue, these things break in very quickly, they aren't four strokes.

General Two Stroke Talk / Breaking Maico News........
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:26:16 PM »
I just sold my 81 mega 2 about 2 years ago.  As good as it was it was not close to a new bike in the suspension department (duh).  The power was very tractable and strong (I currently have a CR500AF for comparison).  The bike turned well but it is very wide and seemed fairly heavy.  You do need to know how to work on them but that was true of any bike back then.

General Two Stroke Talk / KTM Demo Day vs KTM 380SX
« on: July 12, 2012, 06:39:53 PM »
yeah, TTX shock and I stole the A kit forks, wheel and front brake assembly off one of my hondas.  no comparison to stock at all.  My son rode it one day and now calls it "the cloud".

I have a 12 250sx and don't find it to be at all peaky.  has fair low, great mid and nice over rev.  of course I have it jetted right and put in the red power valve spring.

So Yota, how about a ride report? How long have you had that monster? You race it?

I put it together in dec 08 thru jan 09.  had a guy in cali do the frame fabrication and put the rest together as I wanted it.   no racing, off road only.  I'm 60 in a few months and haven't had the urge to race in years.  used to though.

I have a 94 CR5 in an 03 CR125 chassis.   It is mildly ported, head shaved, air striker carb, Rad Valve, airbox vents added and 2007 CR125 rubber boot between airbox and intake.  I have seen dyno charts of bikes with similar mods at 63hp.  I don't want anymore than that.  If I wasn't riding in sand all the time I would have probably crippled myself by now.

How do you kick that thing? look at that kickstart

that's the stock CR5 kicker.  it actually starts pretty easy, more so if I had any ass to kick it with but I'm pretty small and it's on a new bore.    starts 1st or 2nd kick cold with the proper drill and usually 1 kick warm.  the warm drill is to find tdc, push down just past, let it back up and kick thru the stroke, not a jab.

Yota..  love the bike.  That back tire looks huge...  Is the rim std with or wider, and what size tire is that...  I bet you can dig ditches with that thing

standard 2.15 wheel with a 120 tire but it's a sand tire.
