General Two Stroke Talk / Husky 144XC
« on: July 14, 2010, 12:45:27 PM »
according to Dirt Bike magazine Husqvarna will have a 2011 144 XC.  Ty Davis of Zip Ty Racing is testing the prototype. now all they need is a clean sheet redesign of the 250/300 engine platform.

Yes, that was me criticizing Maico,

 :-* It's about time ;D

Seriously,I don't blame Mike at all and don't think the question is the least bit out of line.As a matter of fact,I was thinking the same thing-talk is cheap.I can understand all the import issues etc but in the end that all means #ick to the consumer.
All they want is to see it imported, see it tested, try it and see a reasonable distribution network with good support.
It sounds cool to me and I hope it works out but the older you get the more jaded you get.I've been reading about the great Maico comeback for years and well remember all the hype with the Cannondale among other amazing new makes/models.
As for Mike,he's obviously a knowledgeable dude-he has a Zep avatar! (insert rockin' smiley here) :)

+1 .

you will get the biggest cheers if your rider can jump LaRocco's leap lap after lap.

Didn't Ohlins make a 360 cc kit for the YZ250 at one time?

Not sure if it was Ohlins, but yes... Hung out with Mickey Dymond back in 1989 at DeAnza when he was riding one.  I think they even ran them in the 500 Nats at one point.
yes it was Ohlins.

your elevation level will also effect compression ie. higher elevation = lower compression and vise versa

i think the fatigue life of the rim has been reached :o usually when you weld a rim it cracks again right next to the weld.

i've never owned one but have a fair amount of seat time on YZ400F's, KTM 520 & 525 SX's, and CRF450's all owned by my riding buddies. the first YZ400F's were so heavy but pretty darn reliable machines. by far the most fun 4T bike i rode was those big KTM thumpers. i found myself over jumping stuff on them. their speed is deceiving because the revs were so low it was hard to tell how fast you were going. i have a total of two hours on a 250F, one a Kaw the other a Honda. to me they feel like XR's with good suspension. very uninspiring to ride. i never bought into 4T mx bikes because even when i raced it was for fun, not trying to shave every tenth of a second off lap times. two strokes just speak to me the way a 4T never will. i guess when you grow up hearing their sounds and smelling the fumes it's hard for me to imagine why anyone would want anything else. it is interesting to me that when the 2T bike ruled there was always some guy who loved thumpers enough to try to make a mx bike out of an XR and now when you show up with a 2T bike at the track you have become that guy.

you also have to take into account that the WR250 engine that the 300 is based on has been around since forever. the WR250 is a woods bike and the 300 is just a kit engine put into production. i for one am hopeful that with the BMW money/ownership Husky will R&D a new 250/300 platform to compete more with KTM and spawn an updated line of 2T bikes that would hopefully include a CR250.

On a side note, don't ever sit on the bike assuming it's in neutral(when it's actually in gear)and give the throttle a good blip to warm it up.Bad things happen-and people laugh at you.I'm not sure how I know that :-X
[/quote]
i know about that same situation. it happened to me when some guy at the track approached me to inquire about my 250SX. he had a brand new YZ250 sitting by his truck and i could tell he really wanted to ride my KTM to see how it stacked up. well i was all for riding his new bike but it had that Rekluse thing in it. it has an ever so slight but detectable hesitation (at least the one i rode)before the clutch grabs and you go forward. it was just enough of a lag that i dropped my guard and looked down thinking "did i put it in gear?". this all happened in a fraction of a second. it turned into a whiskey thottle situation and i went over the berm but got the clutch in while hanging off the back of the bike and thankfully not dropping it.

Technical / Re: ATF as gearbox oil?
« on: May 26, 2010, 05:58:38 AM »

who knows, is it possible to use ATF to refill the rear shock?
anything's possible.

What do you mean, buddy ??? I don/t want my shock to get stiff on a landing, or that kind of thing... :))))
well it was kind of a tounge in cheek answer. i mean, you could try ATF as it does have a high viscosity index. i'm not sure if it is as high as shock fluid which generally has a vi of around 400. for me personally, i just use Motul, Silkolene, Redline, etc. shock fluid as i am not into that kind of experimentation. i don't mind taking a shock back apart for a valving change but to have to pull it apart because of using a substandard fluid and experiencing massive shock fade is a waste of time and nitrogen to me. but i'm not an oil chemist. who knows? maybe that Mobil 1 ATF is just like suspension fluid.

i blend 110 leaded race fuel with pump fuel @ 1 gallon 110 with two gallon 87. that blend runs better, jets easier and more consistant than straight premium from the pump in my area. pump gas just seems to get worse every year.
