Well small update for next year.  Bike has entered my garage on Xmas eve no less!

2010 TM 250 MX.  :D

Stoked to finally have one in my garage after so long wanting one.

Only had a two stroke for a couple of months this year before grabbing a 450, been a good year on that, made a big event and met my goals.

However, the 450 just rolled out the garage this morning, and all going to plan, Xmas eve I will have its two stroke replacement under the tree. Not brand spanking new, but a very tidy bike none the less.  Excited to be coming back to light weight nimble smokers after a year on a thumper.

So I am really stuck at the moment.
Can get the 09 for $4000, and the 11 for $6800.   (New Zealand dollars, for reference brand new is $12000 roughly)

The 11 is very tidy, just needs a new rear tyre, the 09 needs a bit of tidy up, but only basic things like frame guards, etc that are a little bit worn.
The 11 has 35.7 from new on it, while the 09 has 85 hours, with a top and bottom end rebuild at 50 (receipts as well).

Is the 11 worth the extra?

Part of me thinks it is, as I like tidy low hour bikes, but the other part of says I could have a well and truly sorted 09, including suspension work with change to spare for the cost of the 11.

Actually ended up going and looking at a 2011 model yesterday.     Took it for a ride, just in a flat paddock, by man that was nice to ride, honestly just felt so light and would just go where you wanted it.   Having owned Suzuki's which always handled nice, I have to say, I think the 150sx felt sharper than both of the yellow bikes I have owned.

This bike had 35 hours, and motor has never been opened.   How long are most people getting out of a top end, and also bottom end.   Considering making an offer, but want to try get it down a bit in price so I can at least do the top end for my own piece of mind.

I have to say though, considering that the top end is 35hrs old, it still had a surprising amount of power, so nice and snappy as well,   boy I have missed that two stroke feel!

I actually made money from owning a 2012 RMZ 4 stroke, bought it for 6800, sold it for 7500 :)
Never missed a beat, went well, just after the first month, was just boring to ride, miss the snappiness, sounds and smell of a 2 banger!

Any info specific to the 150sx, or were they sorted by then apart from the generic KTM things to watch for yo outlined above?   From reading up the 144sx were a bit of a problem, which is why they relaunched them as a 150sx, hopefuly with any issues ironed out.

After a brief two month stint with the dark side, I am charging to get back to a real MX bike.

2009 KTM 150SX, what's the good the bad and the ugly with these?
Anything in particular to watch out, or generally a pretty sound bike?
I know the non linkage design seems to be a either hate it or love it design, so apart from that, anything that needs to be done to sort these out nicely?

Technical / YZ125 barrell
« on: May 13, 2013, 12:17:06 AM »
Has anyone bought a new barrel for a 08 YZ125 before, or can they be repaired?
Found a bike with a stuffed motor going for cheap and in the owners words it needs the following:

"Needs new barrel and piston as on last ride the ring broke and then scored the bore"

Any idea what a new barrel costs, or a ball park figure to get this up and running assuming the bottom end is all good?
Probably hard to tell, but figured some of you gurus might have a better idea than me.

General Two Stroke Talk / Early 2000's 125
« on: April 29, 2013, 11:34:07 AM »
With the winter coming up and cold dark nights approaching, I'm thinking about a 125 project bike to keep me entertained over winter.
At this stage am thinking of a early 2000's 125, as still reasonably recent and common, and parts are still plentiful and easy to get.

Out of the bikes of this era, what's the pick of the bunch, and are there any to stay away from as they were just a dog from the get go?

I'm not in any major hurry, so just want to get an idea of best/worst choices, so any bargain that pops up locally I can jump on.

Technical / Re Gassing rear shock
« on: April 24, 2013, 08:49:52 PM »
Could anyone tell me how to tell if the rear shock needs re gassing?
Have just redone my forks with new springs, and put a new one also on the rear also.
Just wondering if there are any tell tale signs that the shock needs regassing?

Technical / 2008 RM250 jetting
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:55:39 PM »
Thanks for that.   Yeah we are just about to enter winter (sigh), otherwise summer is 20-30 degrees.
Are needles marked on them what they are?   I have no idea what the current jetting is, so be interested to get my hands dirty and have a look.
Bike is going to be out of action for a couple of weeks now anyway as I need to do fork seals after easter weekend riding.

Will be running in temps from 10-20 degrees celcius, and both sand and hard pack dirt.
ALso, running near enough sea level 95% of time.
