Yes, comparing a current state 250F bikes against the early 250F's its a whole new 14,000 rpm ballgame.

IMHO a 125 could not compete with a 250F at the pro level. Ever.

you meant ever again right? back in the early days the 125's regularly beat the 250f's

Yeh 4 bangers wernt arnt like they were. My modern CRF450 handles amazing and pulls like a train. Its all I use for racing in almost all conditions

I took out my RM250 tuesday on a very icy sandish track, 3 corners in and a kick of the smoker power had me highside off and dislocate my shoulder.

I know on the 450 it would have tracked better. I find the 250 smoker slower and more violent with its power but its great fun to ride, sounds a hoot and good fitness.

I can't speak for the difference, but the RMs are notorious for shredding clutch baskets. I would be looking at a hinson clutch basket and maybe a full clutch kit. But a hinson basket at the least. You could even go all out and put in a magura Hydraulic clutch. THAT would be awesome.

Yeh Im quickly being told that they destroy the baskets. This ones now done just a touch over 19hrs so when I take it out will check. I run Hinson on my CRF - best bit of kit Ive had but I wouldnt touch a Magura again. Amazing and light (not that you need that on the RM) but requires too much maintenance when Im racing week in week out and my starts when backwards when fitted...maybe Im old school and prefer cable but either ways I couldnt get on with it and had a few mates I race with found the same mid season

Hi just wondering what guys have found to be best? I always ran OEM on the Honda but found the RM genuine is nearly twice as much as other makes.

How have people got on with EBC etc

Also is there any difference from the '03 to final year made '08 as I own both

Thanks

Im in love with this! My dad & me are the same, will always get things as original or perfect as possible.

Looks like you have an amazing piece of work there. Thats gotta be pulling 55+ at the rear minimum

Current rides are in the signature.... Would like to try the TM300MX if we could get some more dealers in the States.

Id like to try one of these too here in the UK but hard to find dealers that'll let you test/try them

its not the affordability that stops me riding a 4 stroke, i simply dont find them enjoyable to ride. The 250f's feel gutless and the 450's just feel like big heavy pigs.

I think 4 strokes do give a softer impression than 2 strokes especially the smaller class.

Not sure when you last rode a 450 though as Id say 'big heavy pigs' was maybe something of 8-10 years ago. Theres very little in it between my RM and CRF. I will say though when tracks get real muddy/sticky the RM is much better thats when you feel the weight of the CRF

There is no way a 125 can hang with a current model 250f. When the 250f's were first introduced there was not a lot of difference but the 250f's have come a long way since their early days. The 2013 250f's are making the same peak power as a KTM 150 and they do it over a broader power band.

Seems a lot of people only think of four strokes when they first came out and ignore the fact that they have been improving all the time. You still wont find me on a four stroke but they are a very good race machine

I gotta agree with this. Have two mint RM 250's but they wont run with my CRF450. I absolutely love my smokers but at my level when racing hard as I can I find the CRF can pull a tighter line, still hook up and clear everything I need and it makes a bit more up top too

General Two Stroke Talk / 2012 KTM 250sx vs 2007 RM 250 comparison

Just looking at that graph makes me scoff at the powerbands of four strokes. And the lack of power compared to the 250s. It astounds me how people can possibly defend their purchase of a 250F

The problem Stu is they (250F's) go round a track faster then dyno figures show.
Power is not everything.

Yeh true point that

Great write up

Im in the same situation and just tried out a '12 KTM250sx at a local sand track yesterday.

What you said sums it up. I didnt find the handling as precise as the RM on the front so maybe its a setup thing

As for those brakes  :o  I've ridden Jap stuff too long, damn things nearly pitched me several times!
