General Two Stroke Talk / 2006 to a 2002 YZ250. Need some help
« on: July 03, 2013, 09:33:46 PM »
If it has been sitting for a long time, it's possible that some rubber dried up somewhere causing an air leak. If you're gonna swap the CDI, you're gonna have to swap the harness and coil at least.

Stupid question though, why didn't you just swap gas tanks and ride the 02?

General Two Stroke Talk / 144 bored vs 144 stroked
« on: February 26, 2013, 04:46:19 PM »
I built a stroker YZ144 last winter and put it on the dyno and track against a big bore YZ144 from Eric Gorr. Simply put, the stroker makes more power everywhere. It will pull taller gearing easily and still feel stronger in the bottom end, and pull farther. With 14/48 gearing it almost feels like a 250 coming out of corners, and revs like a tiddler.

The price difference between the two isn't proportional to the performance gain, but if you're aiming for no-compromise performance, definitely go stroker.

General Two Stroke Talk / wheels?
« on: December 25, 2012, 01:57:06 PM »
I have had 2 sets of Pro Wheel rims. The anodizing faded quickly, but they held up just like OEM. Their spokes seem to get loose a lot though, I'd stay away from those.

I have had a set of Warp9 wheels also. They are at least OEM quality, which is good since I've never broken an OEM wheel in over 15 years of racing. The main downside I have found with the Warp9 rims is they have a flat spot at the weld which makes them a little harder to true, but you can still get them within tolerance.

I have compared the 11 150sx with fmf exhaust and sxs head, eg yz144 with fmf exhaust and vforce and a home made stroker YZ144 on the track and dyno.

The big winner was the stroker yz. It had more power everywhere. The SX came second at peak, 2hp less than the stroker, but 1 more than the eg YZ. However, the eg bike had more bottom-mid and more overrev than the sx, so it depends what kind of powerband you prefer.

I prefer the ergos, suspension and handling of the yz. The KTM has powerful brakes, but all the yz needs to catch up is a galfer braided hose.

General Two Stroke Talk / mxa used 125 build and 144 shootout
« on: October 15, 2012, 02:31:17 PM »
no mags a pretty much right about even with a 144 kit its still slower than a 250f. now the gap is still there but its there. ive ridden and raced both over the  past ten years.

look at this way both bikes produce roughly 34-37 hp @ 11k rpms. but a 250 makes more in the low to mid range and thats where the extra speed comes from cuz you can carry more speed in turn with less effort. when you start modding bikes the KX250f puts down 45hp and the ktm 150 puts down 40hp.

the benefits of the 125 is lighter weight and its cheaper. the 125s are fast and its been proven that with a fast enough rider you can be competitive but its like fighting with a sword vs a gun. theres a reason why armies stopped using swords.

its just calling it like it is

General Two Stroke Talk / 2013 250sx tranny issues
« on: September 17, 2012, 02:31:29 PM »
so we picked up a brand new 250sx within an hour of it being received get one ride on it. goes great break in is in full swing. second ride we go out and on third moto i come down out of a corner and try to shift to third only to find it is stuck in second. less than an hour on the bike. so now it is back at the dealership after being fixed(under warranty).
just wondering if any other 11-13 owners have had any problems like this?

Is this a serious thing or a joke? If its serious then it sort of looks like you were asking for it by racing it before it was properly broken in and I dont think that it would of happened under normal circumstances and if run in correctly, on the other hand if its a joke then your sense of humour is rubbish.
Asking for it? I've had quite a few new bikes and probly spent 30 minutes running them in before racing them without a drama EVER! Like TMKIWI said, it happens with machines!!
Hope ya get it sorted ab144 and have no further dramas

Seriously? I always spend 2 or 3 hours using less than half throttle running a bike in before I even think about racing it and even then for the following 3 or 4 rides go really easy on it. How often do you rebuild the engine on your bike? I can ususally get a season out of mine before I replace it but even then the pistons are usually still in pretty good condition.

Just because you waste half the useful life of your engine breaking it in doesn't mean doing anything else is wrong.

I've done no more than 10-20 minutes break in on most of my bikes for the last 15 years (about a dozen bikes in total, from 3 different brands, both 2 strokes and 4 strokes) and never ran into a reliability issue and know of many people of different skill levels who do the same. Today's tolerances are so tight, all you really have to do is let it heat up and ride it smooth for a few laps to make sure everything is in order, then let er rip.

At most one-off SX races in the world (Montreal, Bercy, etc.), local dealers lend brand new bikes to American riders for them to race. They don't spend 4 hours breaking them in during the race. A friend of mine bought the bike Jason Thomas used to win the 2006 Montreal SX. He ran in for 2 years without a single issue.

So back to the OP's question, you did nothing wrong. Just an isolated incident. I hope the dealer finds the problem and fixes it for good. Have fun with your new bike.

We're expecting to be there on Friday around dinner time. Look out for the two French guys with #245 and #586 YZ125s.

Ok guys, now is the time to stop showing your hatred towards the 4 strokes and start showing your love for 2 strokes. Who here is going to sleepy hollow next week? I'll be working on the bike all weekend to be ready for the 1500 mile trip next friday.

Some people here are incredibly close minded and immature. Gotta deal with it I guess.

General Two Stroke Talk / Maint Costs, KTM 2T versus 4T
« on: April 19, 2012, 02:04:53 AM »
I'm sorry to tell you this is BS. Manual maintenance schedule is plain stupid. There's no way a modern 450 can't go 125+ hours without doing anything more to the engine than changing the oil and maintaining the air filter. I sold my 08 RMZ to one of my friends. Almost 100 hours and the valves have yet to move.

In the real world, long term maintenance is pretty even between 2T and 4T. True, there are more moving parts to replace on a 4T. But wear parts need to be changed more often on a 2T, so in the long run it evens out. If you change your bike every year, not taking buying price and resale value into account, a 4T is plain cheaper to own. The 2T is cheaper to buy and will most likely sell for more $ though, so it's still pretty even there.

It's not 1998 anymore guys.

what year did Honda start doing the front rotor gaurd with the left fork gaurd?

It's always been a separate part I believe.

My girlfriend took this picture. This is a 2004 CR125. Front fender is an 08 CRF part, front number plate is Cycra Stadium. Everything else is standard. In fact, the stock graphics are still under the TJ Factory shroud graphics.

riding area looks an awful lot like Croom in FL.

Thanks for the input.

Nope. MX Terre Rouge in St-Apollinaire, Canada.
