General Two Stroke Talk / 09 KTM 150sx
« on: August 10, 2013, 05:40:43 AM »
I have 2 1/2 years on my 11 150sx and I haven't touched the stock top end yet. My son and I spent all day at the track today on it. Tag teamed it. The bike never got a rest. I left both my 250s at home. I love that little bike!

I run 13/50 on my 2011 150sx. It came with 13/48 gearing stock. I also have the SXS pipe but only because my stocker got crushed. I have never had a single bolt come loose but I work on my bikes a lot more than most people. I take it down to the frame about once a month and clean the hell out of everything then I torque everything to spec on the rebuild.
I see people having trouble with a few things. Lots of people run their chain to tight and this causes the counter shaft seal to go out. They don't properly torque the seat bolt and loose a seat in the middle of a moto. They over tighten the drain bolt and strip it. They don't jet it right and then cry that the jetting is to fat or that the KTM needles are bad. They never spray WD-40 on the rebound adjuster and then wonder why it got seized and broke. They don't take the time to get the air filter on right and then blame the bike when their top end is worn out in 5 hrs of riding. They only change their gear oil every four or five rides and can't figure out why they burn through clutches so fast.
Run fresh gas with good mix oil at 40:1. Change your tranny oil and your air filter every ride. Don't let gas sit in your carb for weeks. Most importantly, clean your bike well. If you do these simple things you can expect your bike to run great for a long time with out much trouble.

Use a torque wrench on everything and you will have no problems, if not you will need to buy a lot of replacement bolts.
ONLY USE THE OIL DRAIN PLUG ON THE LEFT SIDE!!! It has a magnet on it. Use the torque wrench or you will strip it!

Use the correct jetting for your elevation and temperature. It makes a huge difference.

I would love to see Rattray back on a KTM. He was at his best back when he rode for KTM.

Can't swing it, sorry. Come to Hangtown next year!

We'll be there!

I live in Rancho Cordova, That is the town that the Hangtown national (Prairie City park) is in, Not Sacramento like the idiots tell you on TV.
I live 12 minutes from the track. When I race there at the local races I go home between motos to wash my bike, take a shower and eat lunch.
I will see you there in 2014!

I would like to see an indepth comparison on how the factory stars get treated and how the privateers get treated in regards to qualifing timed practice at the races and where you get placed in the pits. The kind of stuff that just doesn't get covered in the mainstream. I would also like to see some of what goes on between the races like how do you get training time and track time while on the road between the nationals. What happens between the motos at the races?
I would really enjoy some helmet cam footage. Try something different like putting a gopro on the mechanic with the pitboard. Yea, he would look pretty silly but no one ever gets to see the races from that angle!

5gl of gas: 12oz of oil. 52:1 No math at all. Golden Spectro oil comes in 12 oz bottles and gas cans hold 5gl of gas.

General Two Stroke Talk / Need owner reviews of KTM 250sx
« on: June 11, 2013, 07:34:37 PM »
I have been riding KTM 250s since 1983. I currently have a 2006 250sx and a 2011 250sx. They have all been great bikes. I had a 1987 250 that I raced 14 years on the stock top end just to see how long it would last. After 14 years I sold it, with the stock top end on it. The kid who bought it lives down the street from me and still rides it. They seem to be bullet proof if you take care of them. I have had zero problems with my last four KTM250s. 2001, 2003, 2006, 2011.
There are a few things to watch out for. The top shock bolt, the kick starter bolt and the shifter bolts need to be checked often. The chain adjuster bolts need to be removed and greased once a year to keep them from getting stuck in the swing arm. The air box is great for air flow but in a CC race they let water in to easily. Get an airbox cleaning cover for washing the bike or just bag the filter before you wash the bike.
I like the slim body of the 2006 much better than the wide body 2011. The 06 is much narrower than the 11. I hate the black gas tank, it sucks!! It looks old and you can't see the gas when you are filling the tank. The orange tanks were better looking and you could see the gas as you fill it up so you don't over fill the tank.

General Two Stroke Talk / 45+ racing

I'm 48 and still racing MX. I quit racing CC back in 1985 because it was to dangerous. I like nice safe MX where the ambulance is always less than 100 yards away! Other than the years I have had to take off to recover from some injuries I have been racing nonstop since 1978.
Here in California there is a lot of racing for older riders. We have the Old Timers International MX series and the Over The Hill Gang clubs series as well. I am a member of both groups. I ride +45 novice in the Gang and +40 novice in the OTMX.
Here is a link to the International OTMX website. There are clubs from Canada to Arizona.

Here is a link to the SoCal chapter of the Gang. There are five chapters of the gang, four in Ca and one in Reno,NV.

General Two Stroke Talk / KTM Demo Day vs KTM 380SX
« on: July 13, 2012, 03:40:40 AM »
I rode all the 2013 KTMs at the Prairie City ride day. They had way over watered parts of the track including the steepest hill that there is on the track. I stalled the 450sx going up that slimy mud covered hill in 3rd gear at about 20 mph. I went up the same hill on the 250sx in 5th gear at about 20mph no problem! The 250 has good low end power. It chugged up the hill like a tractor with my 220lbs fat a$$ on it! I liked the 150sx the best. It was by far the most fun bike to ride even if it isn't the fastest.

I race in the International Old Timers Assocation. We have 14 chapters in the western states and Canada. Every chapter has an International race each year. This weekend is the SoCal Old Timers International at Glen Helen (10/15-16/11). The international races are two day events, Three motos on Saturday and two motos on sunday. There are classes for +40, +50, +60, +70 and +80 riders. There are skill levels from novice to master in each age groupe. Next weekend is the Carlsbad chapters race at Barona Oaks in the San Diego area (10/22-23/11).

If you are over 40 and live on the west side of the country you should look into our races.
