I was cringing on every straight away towards the end there... Darwinism in action.

McGriddle321 lives over there. I'm up in Port Angeles, so I rarely get to go out there. But I have the luxury of one of the funnest WA tracks 5 minutes from my house ;)

The fade with the clips at 7:52 is a time laps of two laps... the clip before it had nothing to do with it. When I was on the track at the time, I did not notice anything wrong until right before the finish line jump(around 8:15), I then decided to exit at the nearest safe place. There is a fence lining the entire track on that left side, not sure if you noticed it. At 8:26 you probably noticed there is a path off the track to my left, however I previously was yelled at for using that as an exit. I only noticed the bike running poorly previously when reviewing the footage... Hence the text at 7:45... I did not notice it much when I was riding. I did the safest thing possible for me and other riders around me.

Does a trapped piston ring just mean it's compressed? Because mine it compressed. Didn't know you could fix that.

Anyways, the cylinder is on it's way to millenium, and I'm going to rebuild it using OEM. Should run better than it did before.

Ring traps at about 7.50min in the video and at 8.50 you pull of the track. There was more than ample opportunity to pull safely off the track. As I said if you would have stopped the bike pushed it back to the pits and untrapped the ring sanded the piston you would have been out for the next race. The pick up on the cylinder is from running hard with a partialy trapped ring.
I didn't notice anything really wrong until 8:08 in the video. I pulled off at the first safe place to pull off after that point. What is a trapped ring?

I would have had a new piston or untrapped the ring , sanded the piston down, hit the cylinder with acid and been racing it again in an hour or so after that.
I don't know why you kept wringing it's neck when there was clearly something wrong.
Your piston looks a bit lean which is why I would say it's over heated. A good pic of the piston will tell.
When the top end is going out in this fashion, if you don't keep rpm up it dies out. I was trying to find a safe place to exit the track as soon as I realized something was wrong. I didn't want to get stuck in the middle of the track with bike going all around me.

it seems that the bike was bogging in the last minute of the video before it staled. is it my impression, or were you feeling it loosing power?!
It had lost a TON of power on that last lap. Zero compression.

Photos and video of it siezing at the bottom...

~10 hours on this rebuild and she seized. Small water leak. It overheated. Suspect it was one of the the o-ring head gaskets. I could just rebuild it but I suspect I may need a new cylinder. Or just need it re-sleeved?
I checked the crank... It has no up/down play.

What do you guys recommend?
If I get a new cylinder, should I get OEM ($335) And if I take this option would I need new cyl. head too? or an Athena big bore (entire kit ~ $700)..?
Or just resleeve it?

As for the piston I have 3 options... Wiseco, Pro-X, or OEM (I get discount on Wiseco and Pro-X)

Bike is a 2003

Skip to close to the end of the video...

General Two Stroke Talk / KTM SX250 2T 2013
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:41:47 PM »
The YZ is not obsolete at this point. It still has a great motor, putting out impressive power, with a very usable power curve. I've ridden both the KTM and YZ250. Yes the KTM has more power, but the YZ has more low end grunt. The difference in the curve make the bikes better for different riders. Not to mention the suspension and chassis on the YZ was superior. However, the KTM has so much mid range power it's just stupid, I wheelied past the guy riding my bike when I was on the 250sx.

So far from the 2013 250sx, I see nothing to get excited about. I want to see some engine specs.

Technical / Help with 101 on 2 strokes
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:23:28 AM »
All you need to know to go fast on a two stroke is a few key things... First of all, throw away the air filter, that is slowing the air intake and you down plus you will shed a few pounds. I used to hate when I would check mine after a year to see it covered in mud. I can actually feel the bike is lighter. Toss the fenders those just get in the way, plus you cant even see your tire wtf... Install a purple powerband, they are the best. Loosen the chain pretty loose, usually around 7 fingers works the best. And if you really need to shed some more weight, toss the silencer. Don't forget to wear your seat belt.

Technical / I need stronger brakes
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:13:29 AM »
Luckily, I am only losing about $60 for the fork seals (I can not replace them myself). I made friends with the local bike shop mechanic, he is helping me out and doing them away from work. As for the brakes and rotors, they were not soaked, I will ask if he thinks they are still salvageable. Thanks for all your help guys :)
