Non-Moto / Scariest bikes you've ever ridden.
« on: September 30, 2010, 10:35:18 AM »
1.  My old RM-465 (1981).  Had it back in the 1980's.  Powerband of a 125.  Power of an open-class 2-stroke.  4 gears, only 1 of which was in any way usable (3rd).  Suspension of a crappy go-cart.  Weird thing is, I never stopped trying to go fast on it.  The one and only place it would ever do "ok" was in sand washes.  Heck, the old Alsport-Steen (anyone remember those?) had a leg up on that old 465!

2.  XR600R.  Not positive what year.  It was a friend's of mine.  Musta been late 80's/early 90's???  Did a dual sport ride with him, and I didn't have a dual purpose bike (was visiting my old stomping grounds in Cali and only had my full-dirt bike with me).  We rode out of his house in Hesperia, down some streets, and the first thing we did when we got off the streets was ride in to a whooped out sand wash.  Now, I'm really at-home in the sand, and especially in those sections.  But, that bike was NOT.  The front end weighed like my F-250 (truck).  It immediately dove into the first whoop and tried to stay there.  Not enough power to get that pig to get its front end to float.  I tried everything I could think of to get it to ride half-decent in those whoops.  Nothing worked.  Check that...riding somewhere other than in sand/whoops corrected it!

How 'bout you guys?

The Pirelli's I tried came on the bike, It has been a while and I was getting used to the bike, But I remember they lasted a loong time. I just picked up another set on sale at CPW. Ill Let you know how I like them.

I ride Stoddard, Johnson Valley, and Lucerne in the cooler months, And Silverwood, Big Bear and Arrowhead in the summer. I allso run a few D37 Hare and Hound races each year.
Nice!  I never rode Stoddard much.  You ever ride the Adelanto GP?  I did waaaaay back in the late 80's.  That was an absolute blast.  Do you know Gary Menser?  He's a long-time close riding buddy of mine, and he's very active riding/racing the dez stuff.  Great guy, all around.  Every time I visit, I'll do rides with him.

How do you like the 500AF?  It took me about a month to get used to mine.  Now, by running it at different parts of the RPM range, I can make it go fast pretty much everywhere.  It's amazing how electric and hard it pulls from idle...I walk away from the 450's, even in the slick stuff.  My favorite bike...ever.  Heck, I have it turning almost as good as my RM, and it's much more stable.

Hey JT,
I have a 04 Service Honda, Been riding in the SoCal desert for a few years. She definately is a tire eater.
I have had the best luck with dunlop 739 rear MX51 front, and Pirelli Scorpion mid/hard.
I run a 120 90 19 rear.
With the 739 rear you have to run 2-3lbs. less pressure than normal ( I think it is a six ply)
I ran a set of 745's that held up pretty well, But I didn't like the way they turned in.

Glenn

Thanks, Glenn.  I was at a buddy's MXDN ride party last Friday, and they were saying the 739 was replaced by the MX51 series.  I assumed they knew what they were talking about, but I see the 739 is still available at a decent price.  I agree, that's a good tire.  It's what was on the 500 previously, and it didn't fall apart like this one's doing.  I think I'll go back to it.

How's that Pirelli?

So Cal dez?  I used to ride Johnson Valley a lot.  I loved Rattlesnake Canyon, and I'd love to try this Service Honda there.  I'd bet handfuls of that mid-range punch in the deep sand would be amazing!!!  Where do you ride?  I miss the dez!!!!!!

That Kenda OK on blue groove?  Hell, I shouldn't worry 'bout it...just ride the 500 off idle all day and tractor out of anything.

That's one versatile bike...probably one of the most versatile bikes out there.  You can stick a newbie on it, and it'll be fun from the start.  Put an advanced rider on it, and it'll give them a smile from ear to ear.

I'd love to pick up one.  I gotta get rid of my kid's YZ85 first, though.  That baby's collecting dust, and it is definitely NOT the bike you want to put your new girlfriend on.  I let two of my girlfriends ride it, and it threw both of them to the ground!  I almost felt sorry for them, but I was too busy checking to see if the bike was damaged....lol

One more! Whatever you do with your bike, you will never get an unexpected minibike or two. :)

I dunno 'bout that.  Once I went back to smokers, they've seemingly been multiplying like crazy.  Either I'm a Mormon, or I need to start wearing condoms when riding those things...lol...

Ok, how 'bout:

When you dump your smoker, you can just jump right back on her, ride her hard, and she'll be as hot for you as ever.  (unlike a 4-stroke, which will likely go cold before you can get her started again)

I have about 3 rides on my M51, mounted on my 500AF.  Knobs are starting to disappear.  I don't ride rocks (just MX tracks with that thing...wish there was a desert nearby!).  The knobs are broken off at their base.  Anyone run in to similar issues with their M51?  Any suggestions for a good, all-around rear meat for the 500AF?  I ride Colorado tracks, so they'll range from blue groove, through light silt, to deep tilled kiddy highways (which is how so many MX'rs today like their tracks).

Hey guys.  JT here from Colorado.  Maybe some of you are from the Vital board or the defunct Motodrive board, so you'll recognize my name.

Anyway, I went back to 2 strokes after owning/riding big-bore YZF's and CRF's.  Bought a 2004 RM250 a few years ago "just because", swung a leg over it, and it reminded my why I love the sport so much.  The 4-strokes made me forget!

I still have that RM (my son thinks it's his...lol), and I went out and bought a Service Honda 500 ('05 frame).  That is undoubtedly the most amazing dirt bike I've ever ridden!  Don't base your opinion on the bike from your first (or your second) ride.  It requires a bit of getting used to, but once you do, you'll realize it's even more amazing than it looks like on paper.
