Reading the MXA short article on the Acillotti 125, which was discussed here on another thread. MXA had commented on the use of OLDER style Yamaha plastic, My question to the informed group, If a typical lap time was 3 minutes, would the outdated plastic make the times 50% slower ( 4 1/2 min.) or maybe 33% slower ( about 4 minutes ) How much slower would this plastic make the bike?
Ok, Now for the teeth gnashing, Raise your hand now if you bought into this line of thinking (CRAP ). I see several hands raised and several more should be raised. Donâ??t be embarrassed, unfortunately this is the power of persuasion. Now, can you see how a magazine can sway your opinion on motorcycles / technology.
So when you have a chance to voice your opinion on 2 stroke Motocross bikes, maybe you should direct this to the magazines to take note? I donâ??t see anyone else listening?

I saw this train wreck coming from the 1970â??s

I'm fairly sure nobody on this forum would believe anything along the lines of plastics factoring into laptimes.
-
What about without plastics? LOL

I sure hope so lol.
-
WTF R U talking about??
-
That is a sweet looking scoot though, I prefer the Oberdan Bezzi's rendition of what a modern Ancillotti could look like to the Yamaha plastic. the rad shroud could be bigger and the side panels more oval.
-
looks great.

What about without plastics? LOL
Aluminum and Fiberglass for the win! Although I think you gotta have plastic fenders, otherwise you'll be buying new ones every time you crash. But the thing I really like about, say, an aluminum gas tank is that you can actually paint the damn thing and it won't hemorrhage gas fumes. Not really important now that the gas tanks are hidden away beneath radiators and plastic crop-circle-look-alikes, though. [/rant]

The reason micro manufacturers use off the shelf plastic is because injection molds are extremely expensive and in the case of motorcycles you have a lot of right and left pieces.
As for the Lemming like tendencies of modern humanity I'm afraid there is no hope because modern media is so penetrating and persuasive. No body has the guts to break the mold and be an individual. The major manufacturers, through their advertising dollars, heavily influence magazines who in turn brainwash the readers of these magazines.Add in the suspect directors of major sanctioning bodies (read AMA for example) and include a crooked environmental hype and you have the present 4T fiasco.
My father encouraged me to be an individual and follow my own destiny. At every turn of my life I have tried to remain true to this philosophy, come h*ll or highwater, and if I want to purchase a 150 Ancillotti well that is what I will do (weird or not). >:(

A lot of people don't know about this mod, but if you put the front fender on backwards, you can fly
-
I dont give a shit about what colour/size/shape/where it's made, crap about plastics.
It's what's underneath that is important to me.
I'll take an Ancillotti anyday. Like Sachs I have never followed the herd.

What about without plastics? LOL
It still has the fenders on it...

i don't think you guys are getting his post. He is basically saying that magazines are helping push this whole 2 stroke thing, by saying things that don't mean much on the track, but do push people away from buying something. Like saying the plastic is old looking etc. But his point is that, plastic doesn't mean anything on lap times, but they persuade readers that it does kind of, by saying if it looks old, it must not be as fast.
-
The only thing plastics can really change is how comfortable/grip the bike feels while siting and maybe a little weight lost.
-
It's not hard to persuade a 18 yo kid wearing a ball cap 3 sizes too big, sideways with the sales tag still on it, and his pants hanging off his ass, to believe that a bike with half the displacement and maintainance costs ain't as fast or "pimptastic" as his overweight aluminum framed fuelinjected timebomb, yo,

Just because something looks like crap, doesn't mean it drives/rides like crap. I mean look at the Porsche 911 turbo ( ;D ).
As for what categories of people to aim for, here are 4 groups:
1. Assholes - They talk so much Sh!t, that their hair is clotted with it, drive Honda civics, and probably ride 4 strokes.
2. Bro's - People that wear semi tight jeans, ride 4 strokes(never mind half of them can't ride), have a debit card to their parents bank account, covered from head to toe with brand logo's like Fox, DC, DVS, Vans, or Monster, and have fetish for lifted trucks and rap music.
3. Hipster's - Girl jeans, lame music, liberal point of view, and their only source of transportation are fixed geared bicycles...
4. Normal people - Wear normal clothing(to some extent), drive normal vehicles (to some extent), and aren't easily persuaded by mass media and other people.
-
;D
I am a 4.

Didn't work.
-
I am a 4, however I have been know to wear my Alpinestars hat and T shirt on the same day. :/
Not likely to happen again though, since I accepted my AXO sponsorship, I have hung up the Astars gear.
(But i still wear my Vectors to practice in :) )

Miedosoracing has hit the nail on the head about this post. Thanks for responding.
When I asked the question on OLD plastic lap times being slower, I purposely didnâ??t put smiley faces to show it was a joke :)
This article is a lesson of the media putting a negative twist on any brand / type of Motocross bike. This article could have easily had a more positive twist, With Acerbis Yamaha style plastic, this gives the owner many options to personalize your new Motocrosser, Yippee Yahoo ;D
Now you say, this really doesnâ??t matter, why would anyone want a choice of brands or 2 or 4 stroke. Wouldnâ??t it be better if we had no choices and all road the same 4 stroke, whoops not many 2 stroke choices left, go figure. :o :o :o
So next time you echo a negative that you had read in the motorcycle media, count on having one less choice available.
Thanks again and enjoy

I think the categories are too broad and I don't think there is such a thing as "normal ppl". Everyone is abnormal to some group of people :)
I think it is incorrect to think that ppl aren't swayed when a magazine states "Dated old plastics, etc." as Miedosoracing stated. Majority of young ppl I bet would just eat that up and some would just be ignorant to the fact and not know otherwise.
Advertising and marketing works on vast majority and I'm sure it's worked on everyone on this board at some point, maybe not with all snake oil but there are things otherwise no one would spend millions doing it.
Negative statements like those do get through to some ppl because people will also read beyond what's stated. "Oh, the technology is old and outdated. Oh the shocks and suspension must also be outdated it says the plastics are". Truthfully, there is NO reason to make ANY statement about the plastic, it's not like plastic technology has changed in the last 10 years that it makes any difference what so ever.
-
I guess, it was kind of a joke.
As for out dated plastics, is there really such a thing?
-
What irks me is that the Ancillotti is called "weird",exotic yes, unique yes,new yes but "weird " no!
-
I couldn't agree more."Oh, it doesn't look like a jap bike, so lets call it weird."
-
the good thing about the yamaha plastic is that you can get custom graphics kits for it with out having to send the company abunch of paper cutouts of the panels
