need some help....sell the rm250 and go ktm250sx or not?
« on: June 09, 2013, 11:07:37 AM »
i have a 08 rm250 with eg300 kit, rg3 susp/clamps...etc...the bike is setup for me, about everything done that needs to be. got a buyer whos willing to pay my asking price....lve been looking to get a 2011 ktm 250sx...i had bought one new once, but ended up selling it to a friend for his kid. i really liked the ktm, it was light, awesome brakes, really tuneable engine.
i also really like the rm though! the engine is real broad, susp is almost perfect (except for a slight deflection off of hard landings, only problem)...the brakes though i cannot make to ktm standards. i swapped the front for a crf250 master, line and caliper. braking rotors front and rear.....also the bike is kinda heavy compared to the 11 ktm.....

the boy is riding ktm 50's and just moved up to a senior 50sx...thats the other reason, ive been looking for the switch. the be like daddy effect! lol.........

whatcha think?

oh and my secret unnessacary last option would be go ahead and buy a leftover 2013 250sx! only problem with that is i hate how bikes become outdated and id hate ktm to go real crazy and change the 250sx....

UH Oh, now you started it. KTM vs Suzuki  :P ;D
But here's my two cents. I have a 09 KTM and my son has a 12 I think. Little differences in the bikes, of course they went to the monkey motion rear on the newer bike. But they feel similar. My motor has been modded, I have the 300 kit on it and the power is unreal, and will drop right in a new bike frame. Most of the rest of the bikes are pretty similar.
The newer KTMs all use the same plastics now, which is nice for changing them out, graphics if you want. They make subtle changes each year but nothing major. I would be suprised to see a crazy change anytime soon.
Personally my money is going to one of the companys that are still actually putting out a new model 2 stroke. I like my KTM alot, more than my (dare I say it ) YZ250. I feel it has a lot of small enhancements that shows they are putting some thought into building bikes. Air cleaner accessbility, brake pad changes. And as a Dad with 2 sons and a daughter that rides I like the idea of having matching brands too. So thats my thoughts.

I have bike attention deficit disorder (BADD), so I say if you have a buyer willing to pay what you want for the RM sell and it get the KTM. New bikes are fun  :D .

I think you need to consider what you are using it for. Are you racing where contingency money is at stake? Are you trying to run National MX where a newer or homogenated machine is required? Are you trying to help the economy and help ensure manufacturers are building 2-strokes? Then yes, you should get the KTM.

Otherwise, if you are happy with your machine, the KTM isn't any better. Just ride it, fix it and enjoy.

Besides, if you got a kid in the 50 class, you are going to need the money!

your current bike sounds great. It all boils down to how heavy or light you want your wallet to be. unless something is wrong with the RM I say keep it a few more years maybe 3 more and by that time there should be even more new technology etc especially from the european makes.

Buy the KTM.They're a great bike.I love RM's and your's looks awesome but if you're anything like me,once you start thinking "maybe I should sell it" then it's only a matter of time before you do-regardless of how many times you flip-flop.
Save yourself the pain and get it over with already.  :)

I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

well, i though about it today....i got everything on the rm to the way i like it, except for the brakes! lol............why get rid of it.....its clean, i know its history...
believe u me. i really like the 2011 ktm 2 strokes, but im not sure its enough to start over.

i need the brakes more like a ktm....at least the front. i went to the crf250 front master cylinder, line and caliper, but it needs more. any ideas...will a oversize front rotor due the trick, or do i need steel braided lines? i think once i get this figured out..ill be totally happy

The oversize rotor will help heaps. I had a 270 on my rm 250 and it was a lot better than my wife's rm125. It still didn't match my ktm but I replaced the  pads on the rm with cheap ebay ones so that would have had something to do with it
