General Two Stroke Talk / KTM 2014

I see the rad valve as more of a cost cutter than an upgrade.  Sorry to the boyeson fans out there.

General Two Stroke Talk / KTM REVEALS SOME PLANS FOR HUSQVARNA

It's all in the perspective.  China < India.  What do they call it...a race to the bottom?  Regardless, to compete in today's global market its a necessary evil.  Doing the right thing is often just met with bankruptsy and a bunch of "Told ya so's."

My 97 and 01 RM's both did this.  If you adjusted the creep out of it, the clutch would slip on top end with a lot of load.  I just had to find a happy medium, but could rarely start the bike in gear with clutch pull.  Suzuki's are notorious for having buttery soft clutches too.  A cheap fix for an abused inner hub is to just buy another one new since they used to be about 1/5 the price of a billet hinson inner hub.

FWIW, I put all billet hinson stuff in my RM and it didn't really help -that- aspect of the clutch actuation.  It did perform really well otherwise though.

There are really too many variables to even compare anything.  You can't even compare the fuel used in the 1970's with the detergent rich stuff we use today.

I still contend, despite the teething process that fuel injection will go through - it will lead to increased power and efficiency alone.  And I'm happy with a carb on my bike.

Hey there you go, lets look at the 2.3L lineage.  Oh wait, next I'll hear about the compression ratio and 1/11th size bigger displacement - because lord knows the carb was king in fuel delivery.  :)

You don't have to make excuses for the Vega.  Single cams are just fine, my v6 tbird makes over 500HP with one cam. (> Porsche 928 :) )

General Two Stroke Talk / Chain tension

Last time I had a derailment issue it ws due to the swingarm pivot bearings being smoked.  Just a little play in those bearings translates to a LOT of play at the back wheel.

Exactly - VintageBlueSmoke.

Here is some food for thought:
-1970 Chevy Vega, carbed 2.3L making 90HP.
-1990 Chevy Corsica, injected 2.2L making 120HP
-2010 Chevy Cobalt, injected 2.2L making 155HP

That is progress.  Anyone care to take a stab at how much the two stroke has progressed in the past 20 years?  I'm not talking, chassis or ergo's - just straight up motor progress.  Cause from where I sit it appears very little has changed - rather it has just been refined.

I love two strokes, but not because they are relics.  I know the design is superior - that is why I choose them.  But we don't have to become stagnant.

-2013 KTM 250sx, carbed, 49HP
-1993 Honda CR250, carbed 45HP.

Go back to 1984 and the CR250 was advertised has making 43HP.  So in 30 years, the motors are making 14% more power?  That's just not acceptible.  Would anyone have bought a 2000 Chevy Cavalier with a carbed 2.2L that made 100HP?

I didn't say I wanted one...I still prefer carbs. 8)

EFI is a superior form of metering fuel.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is living under a rock.  EFI would be a nice addition to a smoker.

BTW, you can't really compare the infancy of EFI to what will be in another 5-10 years.  When EFI hit the automotive world, it wasn't a slam dunk in the first year.  Fastforward through the crude Throttle Body Injection of the 70's, to the "atari" type systems of the 80's and finally in the 90's you start getting some real control.  Bikes will evolve the same way.

General Two Stroke Talk / KTM REVEALS SOME PLANS FOR HUSQVARNA
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:09:46 PM »
It looks to me that KTM is trying to be the motorcycle version of GM or Ford. Buy up the competition and profit off the different brands eventuall narrowing the differences until the only thing left is the name plate. Don't get me wrong, it is good new that KTM bought Husqvarna from BMW - and that BMW bought from Cagiva (et al). It is also good to join the Husqvarna and Husaberg brands again in one family. I guess I am just depressed with all this vanilla motorcycle market and miss the innovation and manufacturer differences of the '70's.

Husky seems to have largely survived by not being a better alternative, but for NOT being KTM.  The Husky vs. KTM partisanship is almost thicker than those brands going head to head with the Japs.  So yeah, I don't see a lot of enthusiasm on either side about this decision.

At least Beta is starting to take off so the circle is complete.

General Two Stroke Talk / Semi-Related - MX Video Games
« on: April 23, 2013, 02:53:55 PM »
I am still playing MX vs. ATV Unleashed for PS2.  It's 9 years old now and the physics are perfect.  I keep setting lap times on 4 strokes, then go back and try to beat them on 2 strokes :)

I would love to see a game that had 3 wheelers, complete with goofy physics if possible.  That would be awesome.

I heard the intellijet turns into a leaky mess in short time.  That (more than price) is holding me back.

Seek comfort in the fact that guys like me were able to resist the urge.  Two years ago I purchased the only brand new bike I've ever had - a 2011 KTM 250sx.  I almost didn't get one and had to settle for a left-over 2008 YZ450F for $4300 OTD.  Fortunately I found the KTM 250 miles away and happily drove that far for the opportunity to pay $6600 OTD.

Two years later I'm still loving the bike.  One of my friends just purchased a 2012 KX250F, and it feels really good to not have any hint of jealousy.  My bike is lighter, faster (proven), and easier to maintain which made me feel really good when he recently adjusted his valves.  I honestly could not be happier and will continue to only purchase two strokes for my dirt bikes.  And there are others just like me.  I'll go to Husky, Gas Gas, TM, then the used market before settling for a thumper.  I've ridden em and they are different and not in a better way.  Maybe not much worse, but they aren't answering any questions that I'm asking.
