What size engine?

Picked up an 86 trx200sx today for $100 to put the motor and swing arm, axle assembly, etc. on my lawnmower, my question is if i decided to put a whole new rear end on this quad and a "new" motor in it what would you guys suggest? Im lookin for something between a 250-500, i could possibly get a mid 90s kx250 motor for about $200, did those run well?

Scrap it, horrible quad. A good quad chassis for this would be a blaster, trx250x/300ex, warrior 350(saw one at Tillamook, oregon set up with a 98 cr250 motor), and any 450 quad as you can find them without motors everywhere.

It looks like a smaller quad.  I think a 250 might be a bit much.

If I remember right, you may need to be cautious of vibrations from a non counter-balanced motor.  I've got a '88 250R here, and I believe it's a balanced motor.  As I understand it, motocross bikes are 'not'.  People who have swapped a CR250 or CR500 motor into a 250R chassis get some vibes.  May not be any big deal in your case, if you're just looking to toy around...

The trx250r motor was balanced, and vibration is a major issue with a non balanced motor's in a quad/trike frames, expect everything to self loosen or crack.
This guy down in Australia built a counter balanced cr500 motor purposely for a 86 trx250r.

Not really concerned about the quality of the quad because its just gonna be for messin around and the occasional drag down the street and with the vibration issues dont really bother me because ill be checking it constantly, if i dont use it itll be scrapped anyway so ill get some use out of it first, and it is rather small but im all about overdoing things for the fun factor, i mean i did buy a 200cc quad motor to put on a lawnmower chassis

Not all ATV's are balanced, the Tecate 3's aren't the vibration is not that big of a deal, and likely why the Kawasaki's ran all over the 250r's back in the day (no extra counter weight added to the rotating mass)

I agree, but as soon as Kawasaki moved to quads it lost everything. Trikes are the middle point, in that you can get away with some vibration, Tri-Z, Tecate 3's, etc..
