What would be the best air cooled 250+cc engine for a cafe racer style motorcycle? Best as in good power, easy to work on and spare parts available.

yz490-wr500 were the last air cooled models though.

The YZ/IT 490 engines kind of stink in my opinion. If you ever rode one you would know why. Vibes, pinging, short gearbox. They would not be my first choice for sure. Any air cooled big bore 2T is going to have quirks, but the YZ/IT 490 engines just seemed to have more of them haha.

What about the 1980's cr500 engines? Are they any good? I'm thinking of using a 1970's Honda CB350/500 frame and a Honda engine kinda fits... You know...

This is pretty much what i'm after (but red), but with a bigass 2 stroke powerplant. (500Two LOL)

Well, the early yz250/465 had right side exhaust port exit. Everything else mentioned here is center port other than the it250 motor.

As for yz/it 490 having their issue, stock yes. Cleaned up no. Modern carbs do wonders for these air cooled monsters. As for the wr500, it was actually very reliable.

The reason I tossed the it motor into the picture was due to the lighting coil, but you can throw a battery operated light on there though.

Modern carbs do wonders for these air cooled monsters.
I was kinda thinking i'd throw a SmartCarb on there.

lighting coil.
Doesn't Service Honda make lighting coils for cr500's from 84 and up?

APT or Lectron would work great, even a PWK 34-36mm carb would work okay. With the lectron you can get an adjustable powerjet and to top it off a choke cable for the handle bars. I've heard some issues with APT on burning up top ends on extended WOT, but the only instance I've heard of this was some dude trying to do the Dakar with a ktm 125 lol. APT makes the most power out of both but lectron is a very close second.

Spoiled for choice.

TS400, bullet proof bottom end very tunable engine.
ANY disc valve Kawasaki Big Horn(350) or Bison(250) engine , bullrt proof bottom end and tunabilty is off the scale.
Disc Valve Can Am/Rotax 244 again bullet proof bottom ends and very very tunable engine.

YZ490 is s complete shitter the 465 is much better.

Stock for stock I agree the 490 is worthless. But with some work its not.
