It's been difficult lately, not to mention the riots going on here.

I hear what some are saying including Ford, let me clarify.

My passion isn't "working on pizza delivery bikes, changing the brakes and oil, in a crap garage with a bad boss"

It is, to ride and design vehicles, build them and even take them or help take them racing around the world.

One must come before the other.

The current situation is that many of the typical garages want experience, yet many of us have just qualified and not worked before, it's really weird and makes things difficult.

People say "Do an apprenticeship" which is another 2 years of my life, to earn the exact same qualification that I already have, just under the wing of a run of the mill tyre, brakes and oil garage. I'm not 16, I'm 22 and time must be invested wisely.

For the past year I have been looking at options of leaving England, eventually forever. Getting a job is down to me, not the country or economic/social situations. However, I must maximize my chances with the location and way I go about it.

My uncle has a printing company which has business going through the roof, I can work for him, save every penny and then get out to Japan or Germany or even Australia, where perhaps there isn't such a small minded "cottage industry" way as in England.

Thoughts?

Hey Forum, wanted a bit of advice/widsom.

I recently earned my Level 3 qualification for Motorcycles, I can now become a technician, it's fantastic! 8)

I'm 22, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of people who either don't finish school or just have an earlier start, begin apprenticeships much younger than me, and so by my age can have a certain level of experience while having been taken under the wing of a garage whilst studying part time.

What's not in dispute is how hard I will work, and how much I love this, you ever seen a rocket launching into space? That's how much I am into this. It's my life now and I will not stop until I reach my goal of designing and building my own vehicles, whether it takes me till 40 or 70, the destination is the same.

One guy I know has suggested very personal approaches to garages, "turning up" and showing in person who I am, offering to work for free for 2 weeks, less risk for them. I am up for this.

Does anyone have any particular advice with regards to my situation? I have some good credentials as "student of the year" and I understand 2 strokes, which we were only taught about at college because I tore the roof down about them.

I would appreciate any advice, and don't hold back, I am willing to do anything to achieve my goal, this is the first step, initial employment.

Steel frame must be awesome, less bulky sections more access to the engine.

The GasGas have some awesome frames.. reminds me of Bimota.

I'm sure that guy had a thrilling ride with that beast!

Definitely will make the right decision next time. Now all I have to do is seek out another two stroke/rotary girl, next couple of years I'm travelling germany, USA and Japan, gotta be some in those parts. 8)

Haha, great thread!

I should be shot, hung and quartered for the mistake I made a couple of months ago.

On a train, heading to a town to go on a night out with my friend. I sit down, finishing my snack in my leather jacket and realise I'm parked next to this girl who could pass for Eva Mendez, but Eva doesn't have black curly hair like this girl.

She's reading the art of war, and we get talking about strategy etc, she's very relaxed and starts flirting about what my "strategy" is, aha, naughty.

We ended up talking about engines! And here was a woman, who could clearly describe to me the differences between two strokes and four strokes, and she preferred two strokes! It was on.

So what did I do? Got off at my stop instead of staying on and even getting her contact details.

Forum, It was a nice short stay here, you may now press the ban button for my heinous crime. :P


I learn't one valuable thing, there ARE two stroker women, who are hot, AND, see it through next time!

Perhaps a reworking of the posi-lube system from around the 60's.

Hear what I'm saying, variable geometry doesn't have to be so widely variable, powerbands are still attainable, the most highly tuned engines are rarely the smoothest.

When D.I. gets started, it's not going to be perfect, or what people want, instantly, we have to allow something to ACTUALLY HAPPEN. What a shocking idea. Revolutionary in fact.

Why would they get all super performance and focus on horsepower firebreathers until they can get the commuter scooters just right? Think for a minute.

The performance will come.

Perhaps after a few years of DI, more work can be done developing them and tuning them when they emerge in racing for example.

Two strokes need something to start back on again, at least they will start again with something. Nothing happens overnight. Kaaden didn't stop developing chambers through all his difficulties, he could have flopped because it was difficult to start off.

The most highly tuned engines are rarely the smoothest. Imagine the potential in the future, after development wait till they get multi-cylinder designs rolling!

How will any development take place if people mention "It's D.I. it's not the same as it was" that is what will harm the two stroke much less a smooth powerband. Nothing's the same as it once was, at every moment in the world, things change, if we don't, we get left behind, so we may as well make the changes our way.

It's up to us, fans, designers, technicians, racers, to make it happen.

Generally, variable exhaust and intake geometry limit maximum flow of gas that would otherwise be attainable. For example, traditionally, Disc valves offered more maximum performance over reed valves. Two stroke engines of the future may well use variable geometry, but variable to different degrees...They need not be the same from scooter to sportsbike to enduro. The exact same throttle bodies and butterfly designs need not be fitted to every single D.I. two stroke. Mechanical limitations always apply regardless of "the evil/magic of the computers!!"

Even if sportsbikes were restricted, who's to say people could not develop components and systems to make the engines shine! People, especially over a certain age, fear the electronics and the advance of them (no pun intended), when you consider that the average person is likely to become more computer literate in the future, I see that in a small way, power can be given back to the average person/enthusiast as the cycle comes back and we understand what we are dealing with. It's up to us.

What could make the engine smoother to use is variable intake/exhaust geometry, this already existed for two strokes in a form of reed valves and exhaust port valves. The engine will still however have to be designed around a certain speed range for it's maximum power, I don't think the two strokes will be "neutered".

Perhaps at the same time we could also give the four strokes some balls, with forced induction, oh wait, bearing lubrication, more weight, charge-cooling, fail fail fail. Ahaaa :D

Let's keep it simple 8)

Thank you for posting this, I heard about it from a man who was invited to attend the Rome meeting.

The prospect of such racing, is amazing. So many possibilities. I know German, not Italian but I am gonna get myself over there!!

If I may, as a side note do be aware that if the engine uses an oil for both wet clutch and transmission, that using some oils designed for car engines may well use certain friction modifiers which could reduce the clutches friction in an undesirable way.

Example. Typical 10w40 which is designed with (fill and forget) average 4 stroke car driver Joe Bloggs in mind, or John Doe if you're in USA. :)

Hopefully by then, Forumla one car racing will have rotary's and two strokes alongside four strokes, but they'd allow the 4t's forced induction to keep four strokers from complaining :)
