Older bikes are a blast to ride. They really aren't that out dated, one of limiting factors being suspension.
I would personally love to have this over my yz.

What do you mean " give it 10 years".  Tongue
What, it wouldn't take that long?  ;D Not to mention, we all know according to the Mayans that 2012 will be the last year to make bikes anyways  ;)

Ha, he's pointing out that the bike is already outdated.. The only difference with 2002 model and 2012 is the aluminum frame and better suspension. If I buy an 2012 yz250 frame, everything off my 03 yz250 will literally bolt on, even the sub frame despite different part numbers.

there is a gray area in the late 80s early 90s where it isn't old enough for vintage class racing, but it isn't new enough to be worth a shit.  i think super vintage is conventional forks and drum rears.

Just because a bike isnt up to date dosent mean it isnt worth a shit . My 88 kx250 was one of the most reliable bikes I ever rode and had no problem running with 00+ machines in the woods or at hard rock . Its all in rider ability as to what you can do with an older bike .  They may be a little harder to ride consistantly than modern bikes but if you want the easy way out buy a 4stroke  >:-D

Keeping the older bikes alive  seems pretty important to me as far as keeping 2 strokes alive in general .

This bike cost me almost nothing other than fresh tires and air filter,a few adjustments and she was a beast . I had a guy out at tanglewood try to take off and leave me down a 2 mile long whoop trail  on a yzf426 and I stayed right next to him the entire way . This bike cleared the water tower jump at hardrock more than a couple times also . I still miss it wish I would kept it as a 2nd bike

and like i said, if you are going to trail ride it, then it's a good bike.

It did just as good on the track as any trail .  you said you knew hardrock pretty well and this bike shredded hard rock and had no problem clearing any of the jumps .  Seems like there might be a grey area between not worth a shit and good trail bike.  just sayin .

Boils down to personal opinion then really.  No doubt you can huck the water tower, at least on the left side on an 89, but isn't it more fun on an 09?  To me it is.  To each his own, I like the ergonomics and stiffer frames, lighter weight of the newer bikes.  the build quality and finish has only improved with time.  Remember the bars these bikes  came with?  Remember the oem plastics and graphics?  I remember nightmares of brand new early 90s bikes looking completely hammered after 2 rides.  These days, you just put numbers on them.  You have pro tapers and all the goodies, especially the KTMs.

Good point. I wish the factories would put some more effort in 2T's... I'm sure someone has some ideas that can make the displacement rule somewhat fair as far as power vs. power, instead of rigged BS like it is now.

Ask Charles how bolting parts from an 05 to an 11 worked for them at midnight in the pits at VMP.

I agree 100%. The bikes have without a doubt improved over the years . I love bikes in general and working a little harder to smoke newer bikes on an old 88 model is what I loved the most . Proving that its rider ability and not having the best bike money can buy in order to go fast .
my main concern is keeping 2 strokes alive and all the bikes that make their legacy what it is today . Without the mxer's of the past we wouldnt have the new bikes we have out today . Honestly dont feel a huge difference in handling going from my 91 cr125 to my 03 rm125 . Both bikes are flickable and fast .

I've never cleared the water tower from the left side on any bike including the 88 , right side launching into blue sky for me .

That guy is letting off the gas way to much , the 2nd lap around looked like he cleared a little bit better . Last time I was there a kid was killing that jump on an 85 . was pretty impresive to say the least. I'm not gonna lie the shadiest part of launching that 88 off that jump was slowing down for the turn on the other side .  Dam man I feel like loading the bike up and going to Ocala now .

Just checked parts numbers on frames, 2011+ have a different part number, 2010-05 are exactly the same.  Odd.

hey, memorial day weekend, there is a big event at south of the border MX, which is jimmy weinerts new facility.  i am going, and im trying to talk Charles into it.  Why don't you come up for that?  i made that drive 2 months ago, its not that bad from Tampa, and youre in Brookesville, so thats almost an hour closer.

saturday practice, bonfire at night, sunday racing. jimmy weinert.
