Both work just fine.  I have used the "pink-stuff" and did not have any issues.  Matter of fact, it is cheaper, more accessible,....trouble finding a reason not to use it.  Just like pre-mix oil.......whatever floats your boat.

Technical / Re: Cracked wheel?

...yeah really bad.  We have both a MIG and TIG welder and just do not fool with these rims anymore.  If there is a slight crack on the sides that does not extend clear-across...you have a chance.  Otherwise, buy a new wheel or pay a welding "hero" $150 to weld-it.  Bro, I am also really cheap, but sometimes you get what you pay for...

You were not kidding!  http://www.ozvmx.com/community/  does have LOTS of helpful information.  I really appreciate the direction.

I remember that the old RM's had a problems siezing-up if they were not allowed to warm-up enough.  Since the 81 is the 1st water-cooled 125, I believe this may apply.  Any thoughts?

In my opinion it really is about rider.  I have ridden a 83 CR480 for almost 17 years, and on the track, can consistantly turn quicker times than our 85 CR250.  Now, with the super cross type tracks nowadays, the suspension on these older bikes show their age.  Some folks can just rip on those 4-strokes, likely they have been riding that type bike for some time...take alot more to go fast with a 2-smoker.

Vintage Two Strokes / 1981 RM 125X
« on: May 28, 2010, 02:25:17 PM »
Last week I bought my wife a 1981 RM125X so she could go riding with my son and I.  It was running, but was one UGLY machine...mercifully I only paid $200 for it.  Plastic(s) by Krylon.....you can imagine.  I ordered some crank seals along with the drive seal, kickstarter shifter ect...so she would stop dripping on our garage.

Anyone have any expeirence with this particular old RM?  I do not believe I have to split the cases to replace these seals, but is there anything in particular I should know?  Would appreciate any hints before i go "crashing-in."

Vintage Two Strokes / lOld "Big Bore" 2-smokers
« on: May 28, 2010, 07:54:01 AM »
Greetings all,

I am really enjoying all the good information everyone provides on this site!  Some really good information at hand.  I am interested in hearing about others with some older big bore 2-smokers.  I love'em all, even the YZ 490.  Would love to see some pictures of some of the great bikes ya'll have along with some good stories.  My son is joining "The Club" and is bringing other young riders to the conclusion that 2-smokers are overall better bikes that make better riders.

Vintage Two Strokes / Re: Amsoil Super Sabre 100:1 pre-mix
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:00:08 AM »
Today I managed to speak with an rep. with Amsoil who recommend utilizing the Interceptor at 50:1 to 80:1 for normal trail riding and the Dominator oil for extreme conditions/use.  I have received alot of feedback and feel that the Amsoil product was not the culprit, but my buddy's over zealous riding that day with a top-end of uncertain stability.

In response to the "typical" YZ490 abuse all I can say is:

....when it was running, I never saw Jay get lapped or passed.  The only other bike that I know of that can take his 490 in an all-out drag was my 83 CR480....and it was still by just a couple of bike lengths.

Vintage Two Strokes / Amsoil Super Sabre 100:1 pre-mix
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:17:05 AM »
Greetings all,

I wanted to get some feedback on using Amsoil in our "older" bikes.  I use the Amsoil Super Sabre 100:1 in my 95 CR250 at 80:1 with great results.  No fouled plugs along with a marked increase in performance has been typical since we started using it a couple of years ago in my son's 00 YZ125.  Will Kasson of Kasson's Yamaha uses the stuff in his race ready YZ 250, so that was good enough for us to start.....here's the question..

My buddy has a 1984 YZ 490 (I know..it's HIS problem) and started using the Amsoil at 80:1.   He was riding the other weekend when his motor siezed-up.  He did confess that he was really "dogging" it for about 30 minutes when it siezed.  That 490 is air cooled, just like my 80 CR480 and prone to over-heating if you are not careful.  I have just rebuilt my 480's motor and feel hesitant using it now that my buddy's 490 siezed.  Paranoia I guess.....just wanted to see if any one else has had any similar issues of heard anything negative about the Amsoil.
