That is some good info. That large displacement rule was based on the theory of slow revving torquey 4t engines of past.As the manufacturers started to develop the bikes and build them with more f1 style technology that is when the displacement advantage became aproblem. That is why the rules should be updated so that it would be 250/250 450/450 etc..

If I'm not mistaken (which according to my wife I usually am), KTM also tried its hand with a 350? thumper...  They used the exemption as an in...  it wasn't very successful

These guys are always claiming that they're using F1 technology, but it's really just marketing stuff.  F1 cars can rev well over 20K (except the rules limit them to 18), and I seem to remember hearing that their valves don't even use traditional valve springs, because they're simply not fast enough.  The actually use compressed air inside a metal bellows to reset the valves.  Renault is even looking into eliminating the camshaft altogether by using electro-hydraulic valves, whatever that's supposed to mean.  It would be interesting if they had bikes with this sort of thing, and I guess you could say they're using 1980s F1 technology, but for the most part it's just 1/4 of a Civic motor tuned to destruction.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

Yep,and a civic motor is based off of 80's tech.the difference with mc's is they aren't as concerned about as much durability as a civic. So a complete lightening of the valve train and some ti valves so it revs like a 2t and they are good to go.Until kaboom! :D
