I need a project!
« on: February 17, 2011, 01:05:15 PM »
I'm thinking about finding an early 2000's 125 to build for fun. I'm a bigger guy 6' 220lbs so I'm not sure it would be able to haul me around, I've never rode one?! Anybody my size ever build/ride one? I'm just wanting to have little project but if its not gonna be able to handle my size I don't wanna waste my time or money.

10lbs = 1hp so you'll have to do the math ;) -but it will still work just fine.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Nice YZ man!! That's what I'm wanting to do. The track I ride has a lot of fast sweepers that would be awesome to rail on a screaming 125!!

I also love building bikes. I have a KLX110 that I built from the frame up. It has 15.5hp...I raced it on pro cart tracks in wisconsin. Its a fun little bike. I'm more of a dirt guy so I think a 125 would be a cool project. Thanks!

I just rebuilt a friend's wife's 03 CR125 and I am about your weight - I'd look for an SX or YZ.

Where in Wisconsin do ya live ? I,m in Green bay-title town haha. Any 125 can be made faster, but you can,t change how they built the bike. From 97 to 01 the yz was popular, along with the rm, the kx,s handled good, of these 3 bikes the rm is the most fun. The cr,s from 2000 to 03 didn,t have a super strong motor, but they handle the best and nothing is built like a Honda, durable trans.,clutch, everywhere you look the bikes are quality built. There,s a huge hp difference in years, my 97 Noleen yz125 national bike, 98 rm 125 with a Bills pipes engine, are no where near my 04 cr125 with just porting.

Hondas very reliable, however, Honda has made some very crappy Transmissions in the past on both the CR and the XR.  CR's of the early 80s and late 70s constantly are killing 2nd gear.  XR's of even the 1990s always end up with hard-to-shift transmissions.  So, I can't say Honda's transmissions have always been reliable!

Modest beginings start with a single blow of a horn, man.

Remember, to the average person, the word "always" only extends back to 1998 at the earliest.  Before that, popular opinion says bikes were made of balsa wood and lead.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

I've long thought that Honda's were thought to be more durable simply because of their past reputation.Regardless of how many failures or crappy designs they come up with, people still think the same thing.

You need to talk to miedosoracing.com. Why not find an old 500 and redu it. '84 RM500. Shoot, I wouldn't mind doing one of these.

That's an awesome idea!! What frame? A modern RM 250 frame?

That would be totally badness! This would be a pretty serious project though, if it's even doable. If you're good at fabricating, this would be an awesome machine.

I'm 5'11" 200lbs, 225 in full gear, my son's KX125 hauls the mail with me on it.
If a pair of 2" brass balls isn't working, I doubt that the 3" model will make much difference.

I rode a kx85 and it zipped me around surprisingly good, I weigh 173. I,m a member at Denmark since 1990, so it,s just 50 bucks a year, that,s where I usually ride. I rode at gravitypark last year finally, I know Brandon C. his sand track is decent from what I hear, last years rain had it shut down. Where do you ride dude ?

If you decide to go with a 250 I have a clean 04 RM250 that needs cases and a crank kit (have had the cylinder sleeved and a matching piston). Askin-g 500 for all of it. The Navy is shipping me off again so I wont have time to do anything wth it. if your interested call 618-240-0073. Good luck with your build
