MX3 World Championship
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:50:17 AM »
Does anyone know why this class exists? Is it just the MX1 B class? I've been watching it for a couple of years now in the hope that I'll see open class 2-strokes. I dug in the rules to be sure they are still authorized and I can't find any reason they are not...but I find every reason for the current crop of bikes to NOT be allowed.

In every rider interview, they say they are riding a 450 (F). That could and is probably true except...

The Technical rules state MX3 is:

175 to 500cc 2-strokes and 290 to 650cc 4-strokes (CMS01.07)

or

290 to 500cc 2-strokes and 475 to 650cc 4-strokes (CMS19.01)

I'm not sure which is right but I assume the second entry since that mirrors the General Rules and so you don't have a duplication of classes (MX1/MX3). Do you really think the entire field has overbored 450's?.  Is this just another Youthstream money generating scheme? Watching the guys in the back of the field, I think I could qualify and run mid pack maybe, even at my age on a 300 Ktoom, TM or Husky. Where are they?

Really! This class is made for Ktoom, TM or Husky, as well as VOR, Beta, Maico and the other boutique brands. I would think it should be easy to get riders on the cheap for it. What's up here?

Good question.
It seams all the small manufactors are only interested in offroad racing.
Maybe more bike sales in offroad.?

I think they might have to ride a production based model that sells a certain amount every year so the maicos and service hondas won't be allowed if that's the case but I don't see why a YZ 250 with a 360 kit wouldn't be allowed or a 380SX for that matter. I don't think that there`s an age limit for the bikes though because I don't think it was that long ago I saw a steel frame cr 500.

This could be a little project for charles to put a two stroke in the top ten of the mx3 world championships, maybe a ktm 250 with a big bore kit could just be the trick.  ;D

because its the open class and if the fastest thing they can race is a new 450f then thats what they'll race, this is the world championships not just some weekend racing so the riders racing probably like the grunt and traction of a 450 ore than their other very limited choices of old 500s or new bored out 250s.

the cc should not be the same as the main class..
then there is no point in calling it mx3

in my opinion..

Why this class have World Championship? Most of the riders are amateurs, this class really need some old champs to ride there or something like that.
If FIM decide to drop class value, i think all the drivers leave and its turn total amateur class, sufficiently wealthy amateur class, because FIM would still like hard charges from drivers. Now it is easier to get sponsors, saying driving a "World Championship".
This class is useless! Every year FIM talk about to do something to this class, but nothing gonna happen. This year, the series had to be already World Cup name on it, and drop World Championship value of it, drop the entry fee, reduce the number of competitions, etc.
I think some drivers use 490cc kit on their bikes, but yeah same bikes like MX1.. stupid class, all i can say..

So it looks like everyone is like me, and have no understanding of the class. A couple of things to point out...

The FIM rules don't have the "AMA style production rules" and neither do the Youthstream supplements so any year or brand bike could run (although there are a couple of rules that the older bikes might not pass - especially the sound test).  In fact, there is a specific category in the General Rules for Prototype bikes.

If I am correct in my original post, the 450F is not a legal bike for the class without a big bore kit.

I mean seriously, if I lived in mainland Europe, I would race MX3 and vie for a World Championship title. Eventhough I wasn't at the front of the field, I like the title of National Enduro, National Harescrambles, Grand National Cross Country rider and having an earned number. Making the grid for the World Championship would be the cat's meow!

My wife (who doesn't ride) could run the WMX series in conjunction with MX3. Sure the front of that field is pretty awesome but the back is really beginner.

Yeah, it really is a MX1-B class these days... I mean the guys go super fast there, but still nothing to be compared with the MX1.

And sorry for a double post, but a local A class guy competed on a CR500 in MX3 last year at the round here in Finland. That was fun to watch!

We need to create an underground network of 2 stroke riders undermining the 4 stroke world. This madness has to end.

YES where`s Charles at? We need a Service Honda CR500AF with Procircuit support and maybe Jeremy Welkenden or Ricky Renner, even Ryan Smith. Those guys could easily take top ten or even a win at that level. If we needed extra money on top we could even try Monster or Rockstar (they sponsor everything else). Who else thinks that that would be an awesome idea?

That might be a good idea, but I don't think that would work out well on a 500. What class would you think that monster would be allowed to race in? AMA would definitely not allow it with the 450's and because of the displacement rule, I don't think there are any 1,000cc classes in MX. I think maybe a 250 would be a better idea.

They are talking about the FIM MX3 class, no AMA involved.
