Vintage Two Strokes / Re: Maico gearbox oil
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:46:17 PM »
Well I can see a bit of sense in the change in oil from 83 - 84 as the chain primary drive engine doesn't have such a large reduction ratio so the gearbox will be spinning much quicker. That having been said whatever is good enough for the pre 84 engine should easily be good enough for the 84 onwards engine.

Neither of the oils which you both describe are available over here so excuse my ignorance but are they mineral oils or part synthetics and how often do you change them in regular use?

Thanks.

Vintage Two Strokes / Maico gearbox oil
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:31:29 AM »
Well this year it's eventually happening, getting a couple of the Maicos well sorted for a bit of fun during the summer.

Know there's at least a couple of regular Maico users on here so I'll put my trust in them rather than a lot of dodgy forums/websites.

So todays query is gearbox oil. I don't really need specifics about brands more what way to go e.g. good quality (expensive) modern oil or cheaper oil and change it more often, multigrade 10-40 or 20-50 or a heavier gear oil such as 80 or 90w, synthetic or mineral.

Any experiences and/or recommendations welcome.

As far as Americans going over to GPs....why would they?

To compete in the WORLD championship obviously.

The statement would more accurately apply in relation to European riders competing in America...."why would they?" (The answer being obviously that there's no reason other than not being able to cut it in the WORLD championships!)

I'd imagine his photo is being pinned to the HRC dart board as we speak!

Well if there's anything you can say positive about Honda at least they've made their intentions plain, we're finished with 2-strokes, not interested any more, won't be any development, no longer exist as far as we're concerned.

The others (and sadly I increasingly see KTM in this group) are still happy enough to take the 2-stroke money but you don't feel are really committed to the principle, just do enough to get a bike onto the market and would probably drop the strokers completely if economically viable.

I WILL be buying a modern 2-stroke this coming year and as it stands at the minute, I feel it will be a choice between TM and Gas Gas with the new Maico as another possibility depending on how it turns out.

Funny if you look at Mitaka as the source you don't trust it, but when it comes from someplace like Euro Rods you do :)

Well I s'pose it's different for me as I buy direct from Grampian and have spoken to the boss quite a few times as it's not unusual for him to be answering the phone and taking orders, so I judge them as a company to deal with in the round rather than just a name on a box.

The boss knows his stuff, isn't just very fussy about where his own products are produced but knows where all his competitors products are produced and therefore what he has to compete against. Speaking to him definately inspires confidence in what he sells but at the end of the day it has to do the job as well, which happily (so far!) it has.

PS, I believe that until there was a kit specifically for them, people used a slightly modified YZ490 con-rod kit in the Maico engines which gave a choice of manufacturers. The option to do this would obviously still be available as an alternative to the Mitaka kit.

Since then I've been useing Mitaka, a budget brand I Know, but I had been told there actualy manufacturerd in the same foundries as a lot of other more expensive brands !

Mitaka is like an "own brand" name for a company called Grampian Motors here in the UK, I've been using their pistons for years in both customer engines and any of my own when necessary, scooters, quads, road bikes, and of-course moto-x. I've had no problems at all with them in that time and on top of what I've used myself I've also supplied a lot of them through the shop and again have not been made aware of any problems. Then again as mentioned above, they are made to the same standards (or maybe higher) than most of the other stuff so why should there be a problem.

Oh, and relative to a thread elsewhere, for the past 3 or 4 years I've also been using their con-rod kits (same brand name) and have been having the same results as with the pistons. I've a 490 Maico engine of my own to re-build in the next few weeks and will be using a Mitaka con-rod kit in it with no hesitation.

Seems people have become so familiar with the ridiculous that common sense appears somehow slightly odd!

Put aside all conception of what is the "done thing" and releasing a 2011 model in January 2011 seems about right.

Yeah, somehow a reference to the TM's turned into a Maico thread ???  Work that one out. I often wonder if this is really twostrokemaico.com !!

Sorry, that would be my fault. :-[

Against that, this is a 2-stroke motocross site (obviously), when was the last time we were a few weeks away from the launch of a full range of newly developed 2-stroke motocross bikes, including proper big bore versions?

These forthcoming Maicos bear absolutely no relation to anything that has carried the name before so I think anybody who can embrace the whole ethos behind this wonderful site, has to be quite fascinated by their impending arrival.

You should have bought one!

I've three!

Just not sure what to make of the new ones, is it a "Maico" or isn't it?

Then again, what's in a name.

One interesting side note. If you wanted something 2-stroke, well developed, and just that wee bit different, why would you buy the new Maico over and above the existing (and proven) TM. From what I can see so far the Maico will be more expensive but will have to be very good indeed to even equal the TM as an all round package.

Will the name be enough to justify the extra money?

Well he's right in one respect, but "the yanks" have played no greater a part in all of this other than being the largest off-road market in the world. If you want you could then argue by default that they've played a greater part but it would be a very mute point indeed.

However, his overall analysis of the situation is absolutely spot on but again take just about anything you want and the same theory can be applied. Watch a modern GP with their huge run off areas, etc, and then look at where they were racing 30 odd years ago and you'll find a similar thing. Now they have traction control, fly-by-wire, fuel maps to curb the power delivery, back then the quest for power delivered some of the most violent machines ever produced.

Can we blame the Japs, well a bit like the America thing, they were the guys who produced most of the bikes over this era, but yet again it was people the world over who bought the stuff (including Europe) and unlike now when you can absolutely lay the blame for this present 4-stroke debacle at the Japanese manufacturers in general and Honda in particular, I doubt there was similar deliberate manipulation of the situation back then.

So overall, his assessment of things is correct but his attempt to attach blame is where he gets it wrong.

Sounds like there could be a good market there for the new 390 Maico,

............assuming it's all that we anticipate it to be of-course.

John Shirt Jnr, the UK Gas Gas importer, always said that the EC200 was the smart mans choice,

.............and backed it up by riding one himself when he had the choice of the whole range at his disposal.

What more do you need to say!!!!!!!
