Technical / Two gaskets?
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:49:06 PM »
I'm going to disagree somewhat and say that stacking base gaskets may increase the top end and overrev. Adding a gasket will raise the ports and drop compression slightly, which can give you a gain up top. To do it right you'd have to have the head modded to tighten up the squish again.

In my supermoto/roadrace bikes I run very tight squish but lower compression.

I would do a compression test and see where it's at. Low compression will give you hard starting problems.

Apparently "Daryl the powdercoater" says he has a raw chromoly color that would look better than just putting clear over the chromoly.  So we, the proverbial we, may go with that.  Droppin it off at lunch time, with pics of frame, and maybe of Daryl the Powdercoater, if he isn't looking.

Is that "Daryl the Powdercoater" in Stafford, by chance? I'm looking for someone to do a frame. I'm in Warrenton.

Technical / CR250 Crank Rebuild?
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:50:53 AM »
cooksey would want to sharpen his pencil, $165 is a complete rip off. It's a $50 job even with the Honda tin can cranks.

Try Falicon in Florida.

That $165 includes the rod kit, the labor to install and true, and the return shipping.

Check with Andrew Cooksey. If a rod kit is still available he should be able to handle it for you. You'll not find one negative thing about him on KTMTalk or Thumpertalk, he is highly regarded by lots of folks.

I have one on my 105. The bike runs awesome and it sure does look serious.  I lucked out and found it used but in like new condition.

The fitment is a little tricky, though. It wasn't exactly a "bolt-on," I had to flip the mounts around and "massage" everything into place.

While have you attention... What is the best way to clean powervalves? I have mine out and they have been a little neglected  :-X They have some build up on them, and I got a good part of it off, but what can I do to get the hard to reach crevasses and the stubborn stuff off?

Spray-on oven cleaner works great on power valves. It will break up the carbon deposits.

Man, you guys are making this waaaaaay to complicated!   ;D

It's just a 2T transmission...they'll live with just about anything in there.

Technical / Yz250 2011 problems

I'd do some digging on Thumpertalk, I seem to rememeber reading about timing issues on the YZs. The piston problems could be a result of too far advanced timing.

Looks like fun! ;D

Do you run a cush drive rear hub?

No cush drive, just the stock 85/105 rear hub. These things don't make enough power or torque to need a cush drive!

That looks AWESOME.

Been looking for a cheap racing sport to get into.. been considering kart racing.  If there is a series like this in my area, I'd seriously consider that. My sportbike leathers have been sitting unused :\

I've seen pics of 'moped' racing in the states -- that looks like a hoot in a funny/quirky sort of way.  This looks a lil more serious!

Where are you?

There is a "regional" area on www.supermotojunkie.com, you should be able to get an idea if what is going on around you.

The mini scene seems to have died down a few years back, now it appears to be picking up steam again. There is a HUGE race coming up August 6th and 7th at BeaveRun in PA. It is the Eastern Mini Championship and several organizations are incorporating their rounds into it.

Questions..

How race ready is the 105 in stock form?  (I'm thinking suspension wise, mainly).

Did you purchase supermoto wheels, or are those stockers?  (I didn't get a good look).

Been dreaming of slipping some street tires on my RM250's stock hoops, gearing it way up, and heading back to the local roadrace track.  The full on road course is a bit too much adrenaline and a bit too dangerous for me these days.  I dont seem myself committing.  Something like this looks safer.

The suspension will be way too soft. I weight 200 lbs., and was able to source heavier springs from Cannon Racecraft.

They are supermoto wheels, 17x2.5 front and 3.5 rear. The rims and spokes are CACR brand from www.radmfg.com, they are less money than Excel wheels and are still decent.

This is my first season racing it, so I'm still learning and gaining speed. I am having an absolute blast on it.

A few vids I made from this past weekend from the Sandy Hook kart track in Street, MD with the Maryland Minimoto organization.  This is my first season racing a mini, I'm still on the learning curve but having such a good time with it. The hot-rod 150Rs are the bikes to beat for sure, but I like having one of the only smokers in the field.

The '11 XC and XC-W transmissions will swap right into older 250s and 300s. It's almost $1k in parts but if you find the right bike to start with you should be able to come in way under that $10k mark.
