Off Topic, Sort of - Bike Prices
« on: September 10, 2010, 02:15:58 PM »
I wonder what the cost of racing will be in 2 or 3 years. Here is a list of bike prices:

2004 CRF450 - $6499
2006 CRF450 - $6899
2008 CRF450 - $7199
2009 CRF450 - $7599
2010 CRF450 - $8099
2011 CRF450 - $8199

Check out the jump in price from 2008 through 2011 CRF 450- $1000. It was only $300 from 06-08, and only $400 from 04-06.

2004 YZ 250 - $5999
2011 YZ 250 - $7150.
.
$8199-$7150 = $1049. I wonder what mods you could get on the YZ for this? I wonder which would be cheaper to race?

I think we all know the answer for that. ;)
1000 bucks spent on the YZ and you would have a nice bit of kit. ;D
Porting work & suspension work. Could you do a pipe as well for that kind off money ?
If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough

Part (but not all) of this is inflation.  You may have noticed since 2008 there has been a lot of bailouts and stimulus and stuff.  Essentially, money was printed out of nowhere and injected in to "save" everything, increasing the supply of money in the economy, and decreasing the value of each individual dollar.

And like I said, that's not the whole answer, but I think that could well be part of it.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

or do like i did, buy a new yz, run the s--t out of it, moto after moto...... and use that money you saved to keep the bike frsh as can be. i have had my bike since the begining of the year adn hears my rap up. paid 6500 for a brand new 09 yz back in march, now has almost a hundred hrs on it. im on top end 4 and clutch 2. the rest is tires, chain/sprokets and the rest goes to entry fees and fuel etc... im getting podium finishes and riding faster than ever on the 2t. i wish i had a tally of last years 450 total buget compared to this years yz buget. i can pretty much tell you this for the cost of a brand new 450 i have raced this entire year. last year for the cost of my new yz i had spent more than that just in rebuilds. HMMM thats a no brainer right there and racing is FUN again!!!!!

Holy hell.  You're going through clutches 60x faster than I am.  And on top-ends you're going through them 160x faster!  Riding that hard, it's no wonder you're getting so many podiums.

inflation, the strengthening of the yen against the dollar, and the fact that the 4 strokes were artificially priced to begin with. remember back then there was a much smaller price disparity between 2t and 4t, sort of a teaser price to get everybody on the 4t's

And there you have it right there. It was only a matter of time-the time frame being when mostly all you could buy was the 4t-then if you wanted it-you paid it.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.
