Back in the saddle on a two smoker!
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:10:11 AM »
Hello all,
I'm new the the forum, but have been reading the site for quite some time.  I used to race back in the late 80's thru the 90's.  DS100, RM125, KX250.  Then, I got married, military, road bike, blah blah blah.  My 55 year old dad (who raced in the 70's and 80's) just purchased a KLX250 to putt around on and ride in some old timer enduros, which got my thinking....my 9 year old son who i avid into BMX had been asking for a dirt bike.  So for his 10th birthday I got him a 2004 RM85.  Just for fun, I hopped on it.  I forgot how much fun 2 strokes are!  I'm 6'7", 220 lbs and it made me giggle a little.  I hopped on my dads KLX250, and it felt like the power of a golf cart.  Anyaway, to get to my point, the next day, I went to my local bike/atv dealer, and traded in my monster 2008 Kawasaki Brute Force 750 4x4 Quad for a brand new 2008 RM250.  Everyone kept telling me to get a 450 four stroke, especially if I wanted to get back into racing.  I like rebuilding my own engine, and like the explosive power of the 2 stroke.  I already know I'll be in the slower group on the track (for a while), no matter what stroke-engine I ridebut I know I'll be having more fun on the 2 stroke!

p.s. On a side note, I (respectfully) wrote the AMA a letter asking if they are planning to ammend the rules to decrease the 4 stroke handicap, or just make it cc for cc (especially for the lite classes since the 250f lap times are almost on par with the 450f lap times).  I'm well aware of the influence of the big 4, California, and the EPA being thorns in our side.

Thanks for the great site!!!

Oh DEFINITELY.  My brute was fast, for a 600lb machine (topped out around 70mph, 64 with 27" tires on it) but not THIS kind of fast.  Hell, I had a 2006 GSXR1000 that was scary fast but doesn't FEEL as fast as the acceleration on my lil' ol 250.  I just LOVE having the explosiveness that I've been missing over the years past.

Back in 2004, I'd ride my brother in-laws 1997 KX250 here and there, but it was pretty worn (probably way past due for rings) and felt like a 125 compared to this thing.  I'm ready to rip things up now that I have a track 3 miles from my house! (Taylorville, Illinois)

I'm happy enough with the 250's power.  Took too many years off, plus when my 10 year old outgrows his RM 85, I'll let him rip on this or get him his a KTM 150sx.   I'm not good enough managing the power of a 250....so a 500 would just be a lot of roosting and wheelies.

Welcome to the site CCOADY454... sounds like you made the best choice for you.

I love the RM series of two-strokes, they are sweet handling machines!

My stable of Suzuki's included a 1976 RM250, 1981 RM125 and a 1984 RM125. I also got to put some time on my buddies 2004 RM125... love them!
Life is short.

To be honest, I wasn't TOO biased towards any manufacturer, but got a good deal on a brand new machine and going to decal it up to match my sons RM 85.  Worked out pretty well.  I'll keep you all updated on my return to racing as well as my sons progress.  He's got good BMX experience (9 y.o. NBL national champ) but got into MX a little later than I would have like.   Still plenty of time to excel.

Similiar story here CCOADY454, except I'm only 5'11" 200. Rode 2 strokes all while growing up. Last one before the military was a 86 RM125. Loved that thing. Well after a few years away from riding all together like 12 years I got the itch to sling some dirt. I restarted my riding adventures ona 1985 XR500R trench digger. Wanted to get my legs back under me you see. That got old quick so I hoped on a YZ426. Super brute power in that monster but not very unusable on the track. Sent the 426 packing and settled onto an 02 KX250. Still getting the 2 stroke feel back but man do I have the biggest grin every time I kick it over.

Enjoy being on the site. Its great to talk the pingers.
