General Two Stroke Talk / Re: KTM big bore kit.
« on: February 16, 2010, 03:51:51 PM »
I will take the silence as a no  :D
OK try another approach, has anyone had any experience with the '02 (roughly) KTM 380 motor, and any chance they will fit the current 250sx chassis.
I expect at least 10 replies on this by this afternoon, so get busy people :D :D
i have a '99 380SX that i bought brand new that i have been wanting to get the motor into a modern KTM chassis. really i'm waiting to buy the finished product because i'm too lazy to do it myself. i did all the measuring for the job back in '08 and started looking for a rolling chassis. the 'Y' section of the front down tube/engine cradle has to be modified. the engine mounts don't fit and the cases have to be bored for the larger swingarm pivot bolt. head stay is different. engine mounts are the easy part to overcome. the 380 motor (and all '98-'02 250's and 300's) have a resonance chamber on the front of the motor that will hit the frame at the 'Y' section. i have seen some people who have done the conversion just fab up a flat plate to replace the chamber with. doing it this way would save the most grief as you could weld up the motor mounts and  then bore the cases for the swing arm and hang the motor in. the pipe even fits in the existing mounts. i saw another conversion that cut the 'Y' section out and welded in a new one along with a new cradle and engine mounts to fit properly like Service Honda would do. i have seen a third one which was the craziest one of all. believe it or not the 380 crank fits in the new generation cases and the jug bolts on. this guy had slipped it together on one of those electric start 300 models. the primary gear on the 380 crank didn't work with the clutch basket gear though. he had to modify it somehow, i can't remember exactly. i think he had to modify the 300's gear to fit the 380's crank or he made a whole new one. i do remember that the cases finally cracked and broke at the kick starter shaft. there had been incidents of people breaking the original 380 cases in that area although my bike never had any problems. so i think that the 380 crank/new generation cases is not the way to go even though it was a neat idea. i wish i could just buy the rolling chassis set up ready to accept the engine out of my bike. no muss no fuss. and John, if you are ever in the midwest (MO/IL) and want to ride the 380SX feel free to get in touch with me. it is retired from MX and i only use it the few times a year i trail ride. it's the back up bike to my 250SX now.

i quit the AMA back during the Roger Edmondson scandal. i've never understood their motivations for anything.

i kinda have had my own personal grudge against Honda when they dropped the CR500 in '02 and it developed into bitterness when they dropped 2T bikes all together after '07.

i found that it vibrated more in the alluminum frame.
That's not what I wanted to hear.  I still plan to buy one mostly
because I don't know how much longer they will be around.

My goal is to do everything I can to make the bike easier to
ride fast and for a long time (30 minutes).  Crank balancing,
250 ignition and flywheel, foam filled frame, lower compression
and higher gearing to smooth out the hit, etc.  The bike will be
an open class test bed.

There is no getting around the power to weight ratio (that's the
best part).  The trick is to get more of that power to the ground
without overly abusing the rider.

Should be an interesting and fun project.

now that i can ride in the 250f class with the 250 2t im all over that.
Amen to that.  Let the fun begin.

those AF 500's are very cool bikes. i look forward to hearing more. i want to try out one of those AF KX500 models sometime. btw, the comp. ratio on a CR500 is only 6.25-1. i wish someone was building KTM 380SX motors in a modern KTM chassis. that would be my idea of the perfect open bike. my trusty '99 380SX is ready and willin'.

as much as i love open 2T bikes they get harder to race the older you get.

Man, that is a true statement.  I have never been so hammered as I was after every open
class race I competed in.  Even if you are a naturally smooth rider, those bikes will beat you
up and it only gets worse with age.  I love riding the big two strokes, but if I ever raced one
again, it would be the only class I would enter that day - just for the extra recovery time
between motos.

remember, we're talking about 500's that are a 20 year old design. A new from the ground up 500 using 2010 technology i bet would be far easier to ride. Imagine a 2011 KX500 that didn't vibrate. Or a 2011 CR500 with multi-level power options, similiar to what the sportbikes have. It simply isn't fair to compare state of the art 4 stroke technology with 1980's 2 stroke technology. and that's just the engine, forget about frames and suspension
there is alot of conjecture said about open 2T bikes on the internet, in bike shops, and at tracks. most of it is from people who have never ridden one much less owned one. or, my favorite, they rode someone's bike for 15 minutes and now and forever they are a 500cc expert. i have owned 6 different (3 of each) CR & KX 500's. they vibrate, they stretch your arms, there is tremendous centrifugal force of the engine, they constantly break traction. those things don't change with a modern frame or a new engine. i tested a Service Honda AF500 back in 2000 at a mx track for a full day. yes it handled better and had better suspension but i found that it vibrated more in the alluminum frame. i had my steel framed '00 model CR500 there to compare. i had my '99 KX500's crankshaft balanced by Surf n Turf racing. it cut the vibes by what seemed about 50%, but compared to a 250 it vibrated. there is no getting away from it. my hands and arms would have that feeling like when your foot falls asleep after a day at the track. this wasn't directed at you Chris2T, i just used your post for a quote. this is just a general statement about the realities that i think some people gloss over when talking about open 2T bikes.

always remember that a proper oil thread must degenerate into personal attacks. otherwise what's the point? :D

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: price maico 490 1981
« on: February 09, 2010, 07:01:54 AM »
i had no idea that they would bring that kind of money. i have an '81 490 that i bought in '89. i was in college at the time and the seller was getting rid of his '88 CR500 and the 490. he was selling both bikes and his trailer and gear because he was getting married. i only wanted the CR but he wouldn't split up the package. he also wouldn't let me leave because i was the only one who showed up to look at them and i had cash. so he kept lowering the price until i bought everything. i ride that old Maico a little (once a year) but the clutch is terrible.

getting back to westsiderippa's original topic i will give my opinion even though it's worthless. i raced 500 MX for years and owned 3 CR500's and 3 KX500's between the the years '88-'03. as much as i love open 2T bikes they get harder to race the older you get. with job and family commitments as you get older finding the time to train for racing (riding for fun is a different story) them is difficult. hanging on to those brutes really takes it out of you quickly and if you can only ride on weekends that's another disadvantage being magnified by the big bike. the first time i rode a 450F at the track after getting off a 500 i couldn't believe how easy it was to ride. i think the 300cc idea is the way to go if you want to ride against 450F's. a 300 could have a broad power band with more torque and not be as peaky as a 250 making it easier to ride.

i was suprised to see the stock Mikuni carb on that fancy bike. i thought a 38 PWK would have been used. did you do any testing with one?

i'm actually amazed that modern 4t MX bikes are as durable as they currently are. the best one durability wise was the '98-'99 YZ400. of course it weight over 250#. i expected them to grenade more often then it turned out they did. yeah there not CR500/XR600 durable but when 250F's came on the scene i thought to myself "that thing is gonna last two races max". turns out i was way wrong, it lasts four races.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: What should i buy 2 stroke or 4 stroke.
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:35:03 AM »
i was kidding about the 4 stroke comment. since you're such a big guy i would get a bike that will fit you regardless of type. although to be honest you kinda fall outside most machine's design parameters. a guy i ride with is 6'4", 285# and when he's on anything but an open 2 stroke or his KTM 525 SX he looks like a regular sized adult on a minibike. also, any bike you buy will need significantly stiffer springs for the fork and shock. every big guy i have seen is always amazed when riding the bike for the first time with the right springs.

And that H2 triple seems to have a somewhat discomforting idle (feels like it's going to die any second) but DAMN does it sound nice on the pipe!

Strangely enough I was going to comment that for me the video was spoiled by the poor tick over and low rpm throttle response.

But I though it would just make me sound like a grumpy old kill-joy!
i have a '74 H2 (green) and a '75 H2 (purple) and yes the low speed operation is nothing to write home about. it's just a piston port engine and like most H2's (like the one in the video) the stock air snorkle that connects the air box to the back of the carbs has been thrown away for "better performance". this makes the bike run even worse at low speed and it has horriffic intake noise with those pod filters. my '75 still had the stock airbox on it when i bought it 16 years ago but the '74 didn't. i remember when i ordered the snorkle for the '74 it was the last one available from Kawasaki HQ in Irvine, at least that's what the guy at headquaters said. that was back in 1994.

Technical / Re: Oil and ratios

hot dog! an oil thread. where's the personal attacks?

Since you asked,I'll start.I wouldn't give a mouldy hotdog for your your oil theories admiral-hee,hee.Hows that.Anyhoo, years ago MacCulloch,of chainsaw fame at the time, did extensive testing and found to best power/performance to be had at a ratio of 12:1.Mind you, oils today are obviously different but I always thought that was interesting.
oh yeah? :P well just to horrify the oil zealots, i will tell you that i almost always run a "witch's brew" of 2T oil. i routinely blend different brands together. a few years ago when the distributor Motorcycle Stuff was in it's final year of operation, i was given a sample 12L case of Repsol moto2T oil. they had just started carring the oil line. the stuff was clear like baby oil. you couldn't tell at a glance whether you had a gallon of premix or a gallon of straight gas. so i got a clean 5 gal. bucket and emptied the Repsol bottles into it then scoured the shop for half used bottles of any 2T oils i could find. i mixed in some Klotz R-50, Honda HP-2, Motul 800, Mobil 2T,and Redline. those oils were red and blue so they made purple and dyed the clear Repsol purple. i have ran that stuff through my mx bikes, both my outboard motors, chain saws, and weed wackers. i'm still using it up.
