General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Maico-the final answer
« on: May 04, 2010, 05:27:36 PM »
Sooo... who has actually ridden a Maico and a modern bike? and I mean ridden for a good period of time. I guess I dont have a valid opinion because ive never ridden a Maico.
i own a legendary (to some, not me) '81 490 and modern bikes. i don't ride it much about once a year mainly because i will sell it eventually and it's original so i don't want to break anything. i don't have the desire to seek out parts or dump money into it. i got the Maico as a package deal back in '89 with an '88 CR500 and trailer. i only wanted the CR but the guy was getting married and wouldn't break up the group. i guess i was the only person who showed up with money because he wouldn't let me leave and kept lowering the price until i hauled it all away. i have found that most people who go on and on about Maico's have never ridden one. the clutch is terrible, the Bing carb isn't real great, the front brake sucks when compared to other drum brake bikes. it runs good and can handle smoother tracks pretty well. i did run it on the dyno in 1997 or 1998, i can't remember. the first run it didn't break the 50hp mark, it was 49.8 hp. the second run was in the cooler morning and it made 50.5hp.

I think the majority of us have had a 125 at one point in our lives. Warm memeories. If mine serves me rigth did'nt Steve Lambson kill everyone in '97 des nation  on his 125?  McGrath,Emig,Lambson teamUSA
it was 1996 in Jerez, Spain. remember the quad jump? Lamson was doing heel clickers over it.

What I'm finding is that there are very few bolt-on modifications that actually result in an increase in power... who'd have ever thought that??
so true yet people will believe and try and spend $$$ on virtually anything bolt on to avoid the apparent horror of modifing the engine inside where the real power is made.

Problem is Jetz name 1 consumer product bought today that is made to last 20 years.
None/Zip/Nada.

Thats just the way the cookie crumbles.

Chris is would love to see a modern 500cc DI road bike.
The Bimota Vdue has stuffed that up a bit though.
Hopefully it will happen 1 day.

PS: I nearly bought a RG400 last week but the bidding went too high.

one consumer product that lasts for decades or more are firearms. i have several that are over 100 years old and i use the hell out of them every fall. i also have an 75hp E-tec Evinrude on my War Eagle river boat and that thing flat kicks ass. it is the best outboard i have ever used. even with 5 people in the boat it hauls the mail. now i'm just bragging  :P but i have two Kaw H2's also. although i not a vintage dirt bike fan i love those old street bikes. they get about 22 mpg!

couldn't agree more miedosoracing. the first time i rode someone's 250F at the track i thought "you're kidding me, right?" this thing is an XR (without the engine reliability) with good suspension. it's just not my bag. now i see people ride these things fast as hell but it seemed so slow.

Wasn't the 2002-2007 CR250 a dyno queen, but when it got to the track had a serious case of the blahs. A lot of bike mags blamed it on the electronic power valve, but I think it was more a crank case volume or intake thing. Hey I could be wrong.

you must be speaking of a Honda CR250 not a Husky CR 250, at first i was a little confused as we were talking Husky's. yes the Honda of '02-'03 had a serious case of the wha wha's at low rpm. it didn't show on the dyno. i remember MXA published the dyno charts from the '02 YZ and the CR and they looked almost identical. two different guys i ride with had an '02 CR and an '03 CR. the guy with the '03 still has his. the '02 top end was sent to Pro Circuit and the '03 cases, jug, head were sent to Robert Renyard (#17 Robbie's Pop) in Oklahoma. we dyno'ed both bikes before and after. the interesting thing with both was the general character of the engines remained the same i.e. soft low end power, smooth but powerful mid range, and shrieking top end. the Renyard motor had the cases stuffed, used a YZ piston with the intake windows, ran two base gaskets, and was ported and head mods and we traded the stock Mikuni TMX for a Keihin PWK. we went riding at the Little Sahara (sand dunes) OHV park and that Renyard CR 250 really had some guts. but it still dosen't have the low end bark of other bikes like a YZ or KTM SX.

Horsepower figures are next to useless... most manufacturers fudge this a bit on their sales brochures...

Plus truthfully, if you don't use the same dyno you can't compare one machine to the other. And I'd imagine that would be worse comparing dynos built in 1950 versus dynos built in 2009.

To add to the problem, two exact same machines from the same manufacturer, even with sequential serial numbers could have horsepower figures significantly different from one another.

The real question is, what difference does it make what the number is? It matters how you like the bike and if it makes enough power for you to ride the way you want to.

Most of these horsepower "discussions" come across more like, "my dad can kick your dad's ass" feel to them.

The next question I have is how many of you have actually put any machine you owned on a dyno? I can tell you how many I have..... ZERO. So I don't feel qualified to mention horsepower numbers.

I just don't want you guys getting all worked up or upset with one another because of horsepower figures.

And just so you know my bike puts out 79 horsepower... not bad for a 125 two stroke!  :P :P :P
alot of what you say is true John. i personally have dyno'ed well over 300 bikes (mostly street bikes) as it's part of what i do for a living. a dyno is not the be all end all but is one more tool in your arsenal. i haven't ridden a late model WR300 but i have dyno'ed and ridden two different stock '04 KX 250's back when they were new. this was the last year of the older engine before the '05 redesign. they also made 42hp and were by far the slowest modern MX bikes i ever rode. right after we dyno'ed those KX's we put an '03 KTM 250SX on the dyno. those were the strongest stock 250  2 strokes i have ever tested. 49 hp stock and with a Pro Circuit pipe it would hit 50.9hp. i have dyno'ed my KX 500's, CR 500's, KTM 380's and 250's, and my Maico 490. alot of the hp/torque graphs look very close but feel really different when ridden. the most powerful dirt bike i ever put on the dyno (of course i haven't tested all of them) and ridden was a KTM 500.

Has anyone ridden any of the newer Husky 2-strokes?  I know they were always smooth, slow revving bikes, typical Euro power that had a hard time keeping up with the japanese bikes corner to corner on a track.  Since Bobby Garrison won the 2-stroke race at Glen Helen on one, maybe things have changed.  The mainstream mags don't seem to want to test anything but 4 strokes, and if they do test a 2 stroke it is more of a novelty than an actual race bike test.  Anyone with any experience on them?  Someone told me last year there was a dealer here in the Northeast selling the CR125 model (MX) for under $4000 new!!!
the stock WR300 makes a whopping 42 hp. the MXA bike which was ported/ head mod by Mitch Payton himself made 48hp. Husky needs a modern 250/300 engine platform as the current one is very long in the tooth.

i am hoping that Husky comes out with an updated 250/300 cc engine platform to compete with KTM. i really want a modern CR250 motocrosser for my next bike.

i run my kx 250 on 25ml of oil to every litre of fuel... i go through a plug every about 4 hours but think its better to be safe than sorry..
that's a 40-1 ratio. the reason you foul plugs is not the oil/fuel ratio, it's the fact that your bike is jetted too rich.
HondaCR, that sucks. if you were in my area i would help you out with the crank rebuild. i've got one of those press together jigs that assemble the crank true with no blows.

Im gonna be doing more track riding and racing more than anything so from your info the sx is obviously the better choice. I found a couple dealers about 2 hours away that have some luckily. Now the craziness begins lol how are 03 sx's also? i found one on craigslist for a decent price. 2400? good deal?
the '03 250 SX has one of the greatest engines on my all time list of great engines. there is a 11 hp jump in a 1500 rpm range! it's crazy fast and silly fun. if you trail ride in snotty conditions it is most likely too much but if you drop a tooth on the rear sprocket it could be darn good. a riding buddy of mine has had his since he bought it new leftover in '04. he is 250 lbs. and it pulls him around like an open bike.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: What Ever Happened To The 380?
« on: April 17, 2010, 06:13:39 PM »
Didn't know Maico did 380's. I have always thought that is a good size as a go-between of the 250's and 500's. I saw a KTM 380SX on omaha's craigslist a few weeks ago.
a new 380 Maico would trip my trigger. i don't have any interest in a 320. i think my '99 KTM 380 SX is the perfect engine size but the frame geometry sucks.

i think there is a chance that Kaw or Suzuki will bring in some 250 two strokes in the near future. since they still make the machine for other parts of the world market it's no big feat. at the dealer meetings some dealers were asking the company brass about it.
