General Two Stroke Talk / Breaking News!

I am not sure in F1 (it would be similar to MotoGP) but each sealing tag has a number the numbers are checked and a log is kept by Mike Webb the Technical Director. Each time you change an engine the event is recorded. Gearbox can be accessed but not the engine, if you do you will have deemed to have used that engine and it cannot be returned to the bike untill it is given a new number. Engines that are past their rebuild by date are used in friday practice. With 3 GP's down this season nearly all of the km would be on just 1 engine.
How they get such high outputs and long life, would be a secret, but it's no secret they are all doing it and doing it very easily. I do know the oil/filter gets changed after every session, and a dry clutch helps keep contamination of the plain bearings to virtualy nothing.
Engines themselves won't be that expensive maybe 10,000Euros what will be a catch is if a factory asks silly money for a service or lease agreement.
I wouldn't expect any teams to go broke, I would expect factory and supported teams to run the 4T and private/ second tier teams to run the 2T.

MotoGP is 250cc per pot, they get 5 engines per year, to last roughly 2500km between rebuilds, they have a peak rpm of about 18,000 or so.Ditto F1 engines. If MX2 is getting expensive they just need to set a rule for the amount of engines allowed to be used in a year.

When the life and rpm limits were introduced in F1 the output dropped but by mid season HP had been recovered. Most of the engine life goals were reached with just better thermal management and some low friction coatings.

With 400cc torque would be lost, power would come through increased RPM, they have no technical parameter which engines must conform to either (stroke, rod length, rpm limit, ECU etc etc etc).

The 400cc engie would be difficult to ride fast.

You would get some awesome engines out of that the 400cc 4t engine would scream their tits off and the extra 50cc is what a 250 needs.

Who WOULDN'T sell their journalism soul for free parts? As for obvious product placement, I read no such thing. All I read was his opinions of the products he used. Then again it could have been the result of a couple hundred from each manufacturer. No realistic way of knowing.

Someone who still has their dignity, self respect , integrity and above all else the commonsense not to become a hollow sell out. You could do with some reading on what the "Cash for Comment" scandal uncovered and start religiously viewing ABC's Media Watch at 9.20 every Monday night. After a few weeks you will have the skills to spot blatantly obvious product placements. Most films are full of product placement adverts (for locations as well).
The problem with product placement (if that's what this is) in articles like this and the KTM one, is that it removes the objectiveness of the writer. If pro circuit pays MXA to do something like this, then you as the reader are just getting told what Pro circuit wants you to hear, not what the writer actually thinks of the product.
To do an objective "ultimate" build, they should have compared products from a number of different sources and tried different combinations....to come up with the best bike.

That's about the size of it Evo, moreover they treat the reader with contempt.

I dont see what the problem is with this article. Jody was modifying the yz to be the best for him and listed the products he used. Yeah it might be product placement but it wasnt reviewing a stock bike, it was modifying a bike and that takes aftermarket parts.
The article was worse than any late night infomercial, it is a complete stinker. It was blatantly obvious product placements. Weisel has has forgot the basics of journalism and soul his soul, lost what little credabilty he had and has become just another PR spruiker for whoever gives him free products in return for favourable publicity.

General Two Stroke Talk / Engine choice

God damn 2T .... That looks amazing. Any more info or specs on that thing, and what it is going to be ??

Look up Carlo Mattarozzi on FB (he's got a VERY nice Villa 490) he just made it for something to do. I think the crank gears are paired and the clutch runs off one gear Neil he just made it and put it in a frame he made, just to do track days on. Carlo is apparently a old school Italian craftmen with a CNC shop at his diposal. He recently made Morbidelli MBA copy engines.

I think what you need is a Tandem twin 700cc, cylinders tilted at 30 / 40 degrees forward, gearbox underneath, one chamber forward and under the bike, other out under the seat. 140 HP. Chrome molly ladder frame and spoke wheels. Nice fat noisy chambers. Well that's what I would like! I've often thought about such a cafe racer. As 2T says anything with Rotary Valve.
Although I do have patterns for a three cylinder ( 1050cc ) case reed engine just needs a gearbox cases added to the pattern. I haven't owned a road bike in 30 years ( XS1100 last road bike ) and look at the modern road bikes with distaste, all the same. A large twostroke twin or three would be quite nice I'd say.
Good looking Honda though.

Carlo Mattaroti has already done similar though just 250cc.

My bad, I always thought cf was too stiff.
Everything I have read said the Ducati frame was too stiff. Can't believe everything you read I supose.

it was the opposite said you could not get any feel in the front until you pushed it beyond the limit where the front would fold then it would stiffen up and give you feed back , so had to crash it save it on his knee then he could do the lap times :-}}

............and a couple of times per lap !  The Ducati always and still is a absolute jet in wet conditions if it had no feel it wouldn't be fast in the wet.

Spoiled for choice.

TS400, bullet proof bottom end very tunable engine.
ANY disc valve Kawasaki Big Horn(350) or Bison(250) engine , bullrt proof bottom end and tunabilty is off the scale.
Disc Valve Can Am/Rotax 244 again bullet proof bottom ends and very very tunable engine.

YZ490 is s complete shitter the 465 is much better.

has a triple exhaust port and 110mm rod

Road bikers hate aluminum frames for reason, they beat the **** out of you with little to no flex. Carbon fiber or chromoly are the only way to go.

Sorry carbon fiber does not flex.
It is the reason Stoner left Ducati.

Stoner left Ducati because 1) He always wanted to ride for Repsol Honda like Mick Doohan 2)He felt betrayed by Ducati management(over his 09 sabatical for lactose intolerence) and in particular Marlboro who also required too many PR appearences.
In 2011 Valentino Rossi requested Ducati make aluminium version of their carbon frame and Rossi went no faster, slower even at some tracks.Stoner always maintained the carbon frame was far better then the steel trellis rame it replaced.
It may not flex, but it sure as hell soaks up bumps.

I have never ridden one but they do say they soak bumps very very well so it must flex in the right places.

29
Swapper do you think the steel vs. alum frame adds to the handling?  I'm no expert, but I would think with the steel frame with its ability to flex, it would only enhance the Showa suspension, making the handling even better.

Why do you think aluminium can't flex? Since early 90's flex has been engineered into aluminium twin spar frames.

Just find a cheap +05 engine and bolt that in.
