I love that WR 125/144/150.  Would seriously considering that or a KTM 200 XC-W as a replacement to my RM250.

I really dig that second video -- looks like an awesome place to ride. I love that tech stuff.

General Two Stroke Talk / Four stroke agenda affecting roadracing too.
« on: August 04, 2011, 08:17:54 AM »
Maybe it's well known already, but it seems as though the four-stroke agenda (tm?) is hitting the road racing world too.

Caught this blurb when looking over a race bike overview:

"With the four-stroke Moto3 class to replaced the current two-stroke 125cc Class in FIM Grand Prix racing, Honda will release the 2012 Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) NSF250R in America.

...

The NSF 250 R features a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 249cc four-stroke engine that will be legal in USGPRU Moto3 and WERA racing in the USA, and others."

...

To twist the knife further... I quote HRCA:

"Just as off-road riders can purchase and race one of our full-on CRF450R or CRF250R motocross bikes, now road racers have the means to buy a race-ready track bike."

The price:  $28,600 USD.  28K is Ducati 'S' teritory.  What's a good Yamaha TZ or Honda RS or Aprilia RS worth?  A lot less!  :(

I loved the vids.  I just think that wheelie-log-wheelie-log sequence at the end of the second was a bit gratuitous  ;)

(I loved the stone step climbs, and the hop up the ledge.  I cant for the life of me figure out how they do that stuff.)

Technical / Re: Yz 250 hard clutch pull
« on: August 04, 2011, 05:19:16 AM »
I wanted to ask in that direction too -- did you buy your YZ new, or was it used?  I'm thinking the previous owner may have installed "HD" springs.

I just wanted to make a quick note too -- I have a Magura hydraulic clutch on my RM250 -- it's pull is the same as a cable operated setup.  I bought mine years back -- maybe 7-8 years ago.  I hear they may have changed things up a bit for an easier pull on their aftermarket kits.

Anyone remember that AWD bike from the 80's?  That hideous thing that looked like a beefed up minibike?  Open chain drive on front wheel - open drive shaft.  Lawn tractor looking engine.  It was on par with those 6x6 amphibious things.  I thought the name began with an R...

Anyway...  Just had a flashback to that bike.

One thing that bugs me about the fours stroke MX bikes --- We've had the Yamaha R6 sportbike on the market for a while now.  Since '99.  That thing will rev well up to 15,000 rpm, AND last ya well over 50,000, 75,000, maybe 100K miles, with valve adjustments every 24k miles or so.

The big four seem to be in such a HP war, that the modern MX thumpers are tuned way too hot to have that kind of durability.  Pull them back like 5hp, or spend a little extra on durable valvetrain parts, so that the have some durability that's normally associated with 4-strokes,.. and I wonder if as many people would be as upset about them.

GREAT looking bike! Thanks for sharing the pics. Would love to be able to swing a leg over one someday.  I love hearing about the power these bikes make.

I have to ask - are you just uncrating it now?!  (after 2 years that is?)

Technical / Re: Squish...
« on: August 02, 2011, 06:23:01 PM »
That's interesting... (that first link).  I'd say that's the first of heard of anyone being 'against' a squish-band cylinder head.  I'd love to look into that some more, just for the theory of it.

I've heard it said by some that hi-performance engine tuners who are looking to get every last bit of power out of their motor get excited when the head (squish band or area) leaves witness marks on the piston.  I would imagine a setup that tight would leave very little unburned mixture/gases behind.

I'm looking to setup the proper squish on my RM's motor.  I've heard that many stock bikes come loose from the factory -- and a loose squish makes the bike harder to tune and leaves power on the table.  I'm just a tinkerer, so I wanna check it out...

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Actual value of a 2003 125?
« on: August 02, 2011, 01:48:46 PM »
Right - I am in the Northeast too, and I personally wouldn't hesitate to pay over 2K for it.

I'd second that, and say it's worth 2,000-2,500 here pretty easy. That may even be a deal.

(We must appreciate 2-strokes more than the rest of the US).

I may have mentioned it on the site, but I used to ride with a guy that dual sported his YZ426 -- supermoto, and dirt.   I was on at a track day with him when his motor popped while supermoto'ing it.  We counted five holes in the motor -- I've never seen anything like that.  Bottom, top, front and back.  This had to have been about 10 years back..

Technical / Squish...
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:49:53 AM »
Is there a consensus on what to use for a clearance when setting the 'squish' on a motor?

In my V8 experience, IIRC, it'd be around .040" for a tight street motor - and anything over .055 or so is boo-hiss.

Do those specs carry over to a 250cc mx motor?

That looks real nice. I would love it if Cycra do that for the previous-generation RM's too.  Check'in em out now.

Love it  :D

I used to ride dirtbikes and motorcycles with a guy that road raced a TZ250.  I used to ride a 1000cc sportbike.  Nevermind the skill advantage, his bike would run circles around mine on track days.  Light, powerful and very flickable.

Heck, I even got dusted by a Honda RS125.  I let the guy around me on a straightaway, only to have him disappear three quick sequential turns later.  He threw it around like a bicycle.
