Fun with Spec sheets....
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:30:20 PM »
Mike and I were talking the other day about four-strokes and he mentioned tractors when he was talking about them. I told him, "you know, I think that my garden Tractor is about the same displacement as a 450F".

Of course I forgot to check.... until now that is....

You ready for this?? My Sears 18hp tractor is... how many cubic centimeters???

Here is the spec sheet...

I'll take the Sears, personally.  Would be slower, but it wouldn't blow up all the time.  It's like that ad for the VW Scirocco Diesel.

Top Gear: Volkswagen Scirocco TDi 720p

"Get ahead.  Get a new Sears CV493MX."

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.

Not really seeing the point of that thread. That's like a 4 stroke guy taking a weed whacker, and saying "look, haha, 2 strokes."

You're tractor puts out 18HP at and revs out at 3600 rpms

a 450f puts out 55HP and revs out at 13000 rpms

I'm not a 4 stoke guy, but come on

It was supposed to be a silly joke, nothing more... the only point was that the tractor was almost the same size engine (Tractor 490cc vs. KX450 449cc) as the 450 motocross machine.

That Sears bike looks like the sweetie out of those two, but the kawasaki could be ok with the addition of some turf tires. You just have to watch out because when you run the Kawasaki's hard and the dew is still on the grass sometimes the pistons were breaking in half on last year's model. That can stop the whole cut and you'll get dandilions.

Is that Sears jobbie a multi cylinder? Because if it is, it won't pass the AMA's technical inspection until someone signs up for an AMA event with a Honda multi cylinder mower, at which point the rule would be changed, allowing everyone's multi cylider mower a place on the starting line by precident.

Does Kawasaki sell a gathering bag to catch the clippings? Or do we have to order that from Pro Circlip ($2,200)?
I think 4 stroke dirtbikes are a phase, kind of like "Glam Rock" in a way. You see the whole world subscribing to it, and you wonder how everyone could be choking down so much Kool Aid and Spam... Then 10 Years later, nothing's left but the timeless stuff from before and after..

In all seriousness, though, there are lawnmower races and those guys manage to pull wheelies out of the turns. Oh how I'd love to show up to one of those with some crazy nitro-fueled TZ750 or Kawasaki H2 motor.  You could mow a forest with one of those!

Actually it looks kind of fun!

Of course for those that want bigger displacement... you could race buses!

It looks scary because it's not moving.  Actually, I imagine that bus is encountering zero lateral g at the moment that shot is taken.  I know at Chrysler's Chelsea Proving Grounds ring, they have their corners banked up to 36 degrees in the outside lane, and for those turns it means that at 140mph (and no more or less) the driver can take his hands off the wheel and stay in the lane.  Incidentally, that's the ring where they got a Dodge Charger Daytona Hemi stock car up to 243mph in 1969.  That was back when NASCAR used real cars and wasn't boring.

That VW ad reminds me of a story a guy once told me. This guy owned a 400 cubic inch muscle car, a fellow worker owned a Renault R5 (1400 cc), and they both commuted to the same job, a mine 600 miles from the city where they lived. When they had similar shifts they would "rat race" from home to the jobsite and he got beat every time.He said he would be standing there at the gas pump in the middle of the night and he would watch the "narrow eyes" of the R5 go screaming  past him wide open at 90mph.He said he had to stop so often for fuel he could never stay ahead.

As an intersting side note the new Gas Gas 4s trials use "flathead" engine technology just like a lawnmower ,which is what people call 4s's around here.
