Polishing the frame. Who's done it? How hard is it??

I was thinking of polishing the frame on my 2004 YZ250. I hear it is a hard and messy job. But I'm curious is to how its done. And how long it takes??

Thats a big job.
You can use a cutter or polish like Brasso.
I personaly wouldn't bother

Polishing is not real hard, polishing a frame is horrible. Unless you have the right tools and supplies.
There are instructional video's all over YouTube.
I just finished polishing an FMF Fatty by hand, no fun.

The correct way to polish anything is a hard and time consuming process.

However, do not even bother on you bike because the frame is steel. Once that paint is gone, rust city unless it is torn down to the absolute bare frame, stripped, polished and then clear coated to seal it.

I was thinking it would be kind of weird to polish a steel frame.  I thought maybe he was talking about removing the paint or something.  My dad once decided to strip down and re-paint the frame of some bike way, WAY back, but realized too late that it had been re-painted five times, and each time very thoroughly.  Two months later, he almost had it all off.

Powder coat is the way to go for steel frames and sand blasting the old paint off (wouldn't want to hand sand a frame).

If you're going to fork out the money to power coat might as well tell them to sand blast it too as it's not much extra.

Yeah not a good idea to polish a steel frame. For alum. frame, wheels,hubs,etc., your local truck stop has some great stuff, I think it,s called easy polish it,s a liquid,small white bottle. Some truck stops  have blocks of ruese, you take your knife and slice it off, put shavings into a  bottle of mineral oil if I remember right, you can also add some silicone liquid. It only takes a few minutes per wheel and hub, dirt doesn,t stick as easy and it,s faster to clean the bike.

If i remember YZ's have painted swingarms, it can be done but requires tons of elbow grease.
You have to get the paint off then i would rub it back with fine wet n dry then polish like mad.
Easiest to take the swingarm off the bike.
I did it to my 90 YZ 125 and it took me days, i have never done it since..
