General Two Stroke Talk / Re: 2t vs 4t Debate Thumpertalk
« on: March 26, 2011, 05:08:28 PM »
I agree. There are strong vocal personalities who issue bad propaganda about the equal displacments - Davey Coombs. If he was neutralized, then it might have a chance. For some reason, everyone hangs on what he says, and is affraid to make him mad. And of course, he's affraid to make the Japs mad. The cc for cc change would be the easiest change in the world to make for the AMA, but they're polarized by the thought of Marvin Musquin showing up and beating everyone so badly on a KTM 250SX, that they won't even consider it (these are the words out of DC's mouth).

I usually stay quiet about mis-information in this place but really?  If DC was "neutralized"?  The guy who is the reason you can run 250 vs 250F at Loretta's, the guy who's bringing a 125 class to be between the motos entertainment in the nationals.. if you silenced THAT guy suddenly we'd have 250s in the Lites class huh?

DC and the AMA have said on many occasions they put the vote up to the OEMs.  Not even the ones who still made and sold 2-strokes (including KTM) wanted 250 vs 250F.  How does getting rid of DC solve that problem in any way?

In my DVR menu the races are still listed as 125cc and 250cc AMA Supercross.  No reason to believe the AMA has enough brains to get it right.  I've noticed several times over the past couple years they have guys listed on wrong brands, wrong sizes, and even wrong strokes.

You also forgot to mention he's on a 450.  Timing and scoring is a typo.

Exactly, KTM is putting spotlight on the 2 strokes.
Did you guys forget about the interview I did with Mike Sleeter, he will be on a 250SX in a few nationals..
Just have patience, the 2 stroke will be back.

Nothing against Mike Sleeter because he's a good rider, but last time he tried to qualify for nationals on a 2-stroke he didn't make the 40 man gate.  The class didn't get any slower or thinner.  I wouldn't hold my breath on seeing him out there.

In the end Honda is a company who wants to make money.  If they feel there's a market for 2-strokes they'll come out with one.  I did my part by blowing way too much money on my CR rebuild using just OEM stuff through my dealer.

That being said don't hold your breath on seeing them in pro racing.  That will be 4-stroke dominated until the OEMs decide otherwise.  But who cares about that, I want to ride a 2-stroke.  Not watch someone else ride one on TV.

That quote strikes me as kind of ignorant...  I'm all for 2-strokes, but the main advantage to them right now is price.  I paid 1200 bucks for my CR.  Why would I feel like a smarter person for buying a 2011 YZ250 at 7,000+ from a dealer when it's no better than a 2010, which in turn is no better or different than a 2006?

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: What are you riding this year?

'02 CR250 in mostly MX, maybe the occasional off-road.  +25 and +30 A.  Mostly gonna race Evo Sports Vet series down south around Houston.  They let my 2-stroke race against 250 4-strokes and as an '02 it qualifies for the Decade vintage class.

I thought the 450's weren't allowed in Arenacross anymore due to being too fast for the tight tracks?

That rule has long since been changed.  They went back to a Supercross-like format of a Lites and premier class.  At least they changed the rules about allowing guys to double dip so you're not watching the same guys race different bikes like it was for decades.

And yea, if you don't know what to expect from an Arenacross you probably shouldn't just go out there and race an AMA event even on amateur day.  If you're talking some local organization putting one on in a small arena near you the track is probably just fine, but the real thing is the closest track you'll ride to Supercross.  The jumps are very peaked and the catapult is far bigger on the floor than it is from the stands.

I think the dispute and problem is that the 250 2-stroke is considered an advantage over the 4-stroke isn't it?  I don't think I've heard anyone claim the 4-stroke was a better bike, it (the 2-stroke) would win probably pretty easily.  And that would just be more ammunition on why they shouldn't be put in the Lites class at the pro level.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Cedric's 2 stroke out for whole season!!!!

Exactly, the next logical possibility was Fabien Izoird who has made mains the last few years and according to the video linked below has at least ridden a 2-stroke recently.  But he is now Factory Kawi's replacement for Jake Weimer.

Cedric simply can't heal from broken elbows that fast.  He already had a contract in place to race select GPs which is why his schedule was only 6 races to start with.  Not so much conspiracy as the people who are actually paying him a salary wanting their rider healthy.

DV said already he's not looking for anyone to ride the bike.  You're asking the impossible anyway.. looking for someone who can 1) make a SX main, 2) familiar with a 250 2-stroke in SX, 3) willing to race for basically nothing but the exposure.

It's nice to see series letting the 150s into the 250F classes.  Obviously 250 vs 250F is ideal but the 150SX can obviously still be competitive.

You're only listening to shows after he has already talked about it.  He has covered 2-strokes at length and feels the topic is a dead horse.  In past shows (specifically Dec 01 podcast labeled The News with Tits Legendary, I'll even give you a time marker where he starts talking about it.  Minute 54) he gives his full honest opinion on what happened when 4-strokes came on the scene and how it feels about it.  You need to remember Matthes has been a factory mechanic for Yamaha when they came out with the 400, 426, and 250F.

If you don't feel like listening to the show his statements are pretty pro 2-stroke, he puts a lot of the blame on the OEMs and AMA for not toning down the 4-strokes when it was obvious they were an advantage.  And especially a bad taste for how Yamaha pushed the 250F and pretty much put an end to the 125 class.

Just a little insight on that, If the OEM's knew full well that the 4 strokes had a displacement advantage that everyone would have to go out and buy new bikes to replace the older uncompatitive ones????

or am I way off?

Everyone has their own opinion on that but I'd lean toward the idea sales increased because the 4-strokes were new and different.  Especially at first the 4-stroke wasn't even a good bike.  I don't think anyone who rode those old 400 Yamahas when they came out (which I did) would have said it was better than a 250 2-stroke, I sure didn't think they were.  But there were still a ton of them showing up at local tracks.

Yes yes, that's the regular ride.  The 250 was just a project for fun.  But it's tough swapping back and forth between the bikes when I ride, I just need to stick with one or the other.  Since the 450 has payments attached to it, the decision is already kinda made there.  Plus one guy with a kid on the way doesn't need so many damn toys for himself.
