125 or 250
« on: April 28, 2011, 09:36:47 PM »
hey guys, im looking to get back into motocross after about 4 year absence but i have no idea what bike to get.  Im not into 4 strokes but dont know either to get a 125 or 250.  I used to race 85s so im not a complete beginner.  At 16 im 6'3 and 190lbs, and the question is, would the 125 be too slow for me?  I like the idea of having a slower bike that i could wring its neck and make me have to focus on technique and not just rely on the power of the bike, but for someone my size i dont know if the 125 is just out of the question. what do you think the better bike for me would be?  Oppinions are very welcome, thanks for the feedback

Sounds like you have anwsered your own question. ;D
If you want a bike to ring it's neck. 125 is the go.
Also might depend on the class's you will be running in.
If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough

A 125 will pull you around but the suspension might be a bit soft and you might have a bit of a problem doing some jumps. I am about 200 pounds an while my wifes 125 is fun I am glad I bought a 250. It is just that bit more suited to my weight. I don't race, just ride at tracks for fun and much rather the 250 and I had a 9 year break from dirtbikes and I previously raced 125's

A 125 would provide you the ride you are looking for though as stated, you will need to change springs to suit your additional weight (though depending on your current skill level, you may just be able to get away with it for awhile).

However, there is another option. Several companies are producing 'between' bikes. Some are aftermarket while others are factory! I'm talking about the bikes in the range of 139, 144, 150 and 200. This provides the best of both worlds, the light and flickablity of the 125 and the grunt of the 250. Honestly, all are about the same (more or less) so it comes down to your wallet thickness and your favorite color.

And along those lines, you can always go bigger, but you can't get smaller. In otherwords, you can buy a 125 and later upgrade it to a 139 or 144 but you can never make a 250 into a 125.  Just another thing to think about.

At your size and experience, I would recommend a 125 six speed, with the correct springs for your weight, the tallest handle bars you can find, and a tall seat foam.
I got my son a 99 KX125, with a stock bore Wiseco piston, and boysen reeds, I then installed a Moose Torque Spacer and FMF tubine core silencer, it barks hard off the bottom, and is nice and smooth all the way to the top, it totally hauls the mail with my 5'10", 190lb(+ gear) butt on it.
It is faster than my buddies KDX220 which has a full PC exhaust, radvalve, and $600 worth of suspension work.
Makes me wish I could have gotten a 2007 KX125 when I got my 2007 KX250, but that was an impossibility. :'(

Im 6'4 and i ride a 250.  you could go with either a 125 or a 250 and have made a good decision.  I will say though that after a while the 125 will start felling really slow and you will most likely move up to a 250 just like i did after a year and a half on the good ole 125.

True that, but a 125 will allow him to develop speed and better riding skills before getting on a 250 .

Get a 125 there way more fun, your not the ideal weight, but  you,ll  still fly. James DOB  was  125 world champ and he was 190 lbs.

Both bikes would be great. Both have their ups and their downs. The 125 would be cheaper to get but the 250 would last longer between tear-downs.
I am 200+lbs. I ride a 250 KTM but I love riding my sons 150 KTM. It is to soft for me so I can't take the huge jumps on it with out feeling the pain of severely bottoming out.
It pulls me fine on hard-pack tracks but in the deep sand it feels like I could ride my bicycle faster. Once I get it up on top of the sand it is fine. It is a blast to ride but I would much rather race my 250.
The 250 is great fun riding wheelies from corner to corner. It is not as easy to change lines on as the 150 but when you turn the throttle wide open it gets up and goes in a hurry. It has ten times the low end grunt.
If I was to quit racing and just ride I think I would get a 150 or even better, I would get a 200xc and go through the suspension.
