2013 Yamaha YZ250
« on: November 23, 2012, 04:10:18 PM »
I just got back from my local dealer where I was drooling over one.Definitely a sweet ride in person-especially at a very reasonable $7299.
Ck out the following video. It's interesting to hear the Yamaha rep talk about them. There may be no DI,but it would appear that, unlike Honda,Yamaha isn't willing to let them go yet. 8)

I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Not really wtf factoryX,I have an 02,which is basically the same as your bike, and it's a lot different from the new one. It's sounds good to say I have the same as a new bike, but there are many changes throughout year to year that have improved it to where it is now.The many differences between '13 and mine are obvious when you have actually seen one in person.

Shanes, despite many small changes, they are in many ways still the same bike.On the other hand,in almost every way except plastic,my 02 125SX KTM is still the same bike as the '12.Except for plastic little difference between the two though some on here crow about the "new models" when they change the plastic.

BTW,I have over 500 in my suspension and it's still not the same.
As for the orange ones,I've had two(three if you count the Berg) so I know what they're about also. They still don't have the suspension down(I haven't ridden the '13 yet).It would appear the issues aren't all with the no link.

nom de guerre, you obviously weren't paying attention.I was looking at the 2013 YZ in person. You may not like it because it isn't DI or whatever, but the fact remains,it's here,in person,I sat on it(also sat in the Rhino alongside it slurping my coffee while I admired it :) ) and if I had that kind of cash in my pocket yesterday,I could have taken it home and ridden when I got there.

The main selling feature WTFFactory X,isn't that they are fun to ride(though that's a big one)but the fact you can still buy one-granted,small improvements year to year but they have added up to an excellent, reliable bike.
Yes,the KTM has a few horsies on it but then, they usually have for the last 10+ years.KTM knows how to build an engine,no doubt about that.Having said that,I doubt anyone on this site could ride the YZ250 anywhere near it's potential-or a 10-15 yr old model of any brand for that matter.
The other big selling feature, for me anyway,is that the YZ250 is still recognized as having the best suspension in the business-hands down, without exception. Not bad for "old technology,10 yr old bike" :<img src=" title="Roll Eyes" class="smiley">
BTW,if someone offered you a new one for free,or another used 03 with a $500 cheque, which would you take?

It's great to see the youth on this site,it reminds me of myself years ago.I used to buy in to what the mags said as well-I had 3 new bikes in 2.5 years at one point-this one supposedly way better than that, faster etc but in time, you learn.

All this fun stuff aside, what I find most interesting is that Yamaha is promoting them this way.Yes,KTM has lots of 2t's blah, blah, blah but this is one of the big Jap companies-and the only one doing it.Honda says they're 4t,Kawasaki's and Suzuki's have gone away in this market(except the 80 they use to fill a void in their line) and have stated no interest.
The fact that Yamaha is promoting them leads me to believe something new may be coming down the pipe.
Yamaha is known for playing their cards pretty close to their chest so something may well be coming in a year or two.Time will tell. :)

Easy now Ford... It was a jab in the ribs and based off your own sig.... I wasn't paying attention other than you posted an interest in the 2013 Yamaha. I have seen the "new" Yamahas and have said that I even like them more or less... I just cant get past the ancient body work. Yes, the Yamahas are probably better than most can ride, in stock form. I have even defended Yamaha on here as supporting 2 strokes by still manufacturing them, while some of the radical types on here argue to the contrary... Buy it Ford and support the only Japanese mfg that still makes a 2t. If I got one, the UFO kit would be on it the same day.

I know what your saying ford. I saw one in person at the dealer some time ago and the first thing that struck me was how low the rear suspension was (at least compared to mine). And whether or not Yamaha is making any changes, they are still MAKING two strokes, which is more than I can say for some other companies and I think they should get some support. Obviously to most people picking up an earlier year bike and doing the suspension is cheaper and seems to be the same, but there are some people out there who prefer the latest and greatest. I know if I could throw around that money I would buy one.

PS What exactly should they change? They already have great suspension, a powerful motor, and an alu. frame. The only big thing I can see to change would be switching to DI/EFI which they may not be ready for. There isn't much more to change that would make the new YZ's revolutionary or "new" IMHO.

Agreed cnrcpla and nom de guerre,no worries,It's all good fun.As for the plastic though,I thought it was butt ugly when it came out in 02 with the weird oval slashes, pointy rear fender and angular muffler-but the rest of the bike outweighs the ugliness.
I don't like the new 4t's either and wouldn't put one of those kits on mine.I do like the bodywork or the previous generation of Yamaha 4t-and wished mine looked like that.
BTW,when I had my SX I always wished I had that engine in a YZ250 chassis, that would have been, and still would be a perfect bike for me.It's a shame I don't believe in putting one brands engine in anothers chassis like that.I grosses me out,on a mechanical correctness level. :D

It's obvious Yamaha is not updating the 2T because they don't want to lose 4T sales (leave the 2T to the die hards - they won't buy a 4T anyway). The basic design works well, the tooling was paid for long ago so how much would it cost to update the plastic? Or, for that matter, how much for WR 250/ 300 offroad variants? Bet they'd sell a bunch - at the expense of their 4T$.

Why would they do that? We all know that one metal mulisha sticker increases the HP by 200%  ;)  ;D
