They should make MX four-strokes like THIS!
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:54:55 PM »
Normally, a four-stroke engine is a bit of a turd.  That's pretty-well agreed here.  However, There have been times in the past when some companies have made four-strokes that are truly insane.  Why have we never seen a turbocharged dirt-bike?  Sure, it's not allowed in official competition, but I think it would still sell on the novelty value.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

A turbo on a db would hit to hard on spool up not to mention the packaging nightmare. There are some turbo xr's and rmz's and yfz 4 junks that have been turboed for dune riding.Might just as well by a cr or kx 500.

I should have mentioned that those 80's vintage rally cars were insane.

They were insane, and that's what makes them awesome.  I wouldn't mind owning a 4T if the power came on like a bomb and there was a big sound of blow-off whenever you let off the gas to shift.  Besides, the power delivery couldn't possibly be worse than a Suzuki TM400.

That is awesome! I have wondered if their has ever been a 2stroke car in modern times. Those things sound down right nasty, in a good way. Does anyone have any performance specs?

how come turbo's are praised when they give 4 strokes some of the same characteristics that 2 strokes are badmouthed for - lack of bottom end torque, lowered reliability, increased gas consumption. My Saab 9-3 is turbo charged with a very mild amount of boost, maybe 6-8lbs. At that level turbos have advantages, but when you start dialing in serious boost it becomes a grenade. I'd much rather have a 2 stroke.

There's some videos on youtube that show 4t singles that were turbo'd, not many though. You thought 450F's were unreliable and expensive without turbo, imagine with a turbo? You could easily double the horsepower though, if you can afford it..

By the way, lots of youtube videos showing turbo'd 2 strokes, especially snowmobiles ;-)
