Open Forum / Zach Bells Crash out. Holy crap.
« on: February 18, 2013, 03:55:15 AM »
I can't say I blame him. Is he out for the season? hes crazy lucky to have not been injured.

Stusmoke - He actually got back on and rode that dirtcycle in the LCQ and won.  He rode the main but crashed very hard into a bowl turn.  He is tough as hell but I sure wouldnt want to feel his pain tomorrow.

Technical / Clutch Plate Life Question - 2005 YZ 125
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:06:34 PM »
If your clutch doesn't slip at WOT under a heavy load even with worn springs, I would say your plates are fine.

Thanks for all the inputs!  I bought new springs already and put them in anyways.  As I was doing this I was thinking 'does this really matter'.  Oh well.  Old plates and new springs.  Its all buttoned up now and ready to ride this weekend.

Thanks again for the insight.

Technical / Clutch Plate Life Question - 2005 YZ 125
« on: July 28, 2012, 06:20:37 PM »
Yes you are looking for an excuse. ;D
There is no set time to replace plates.
Too many variables. Hours, how hard you ride etc.
If they are in spec and nothing is warped , put them back in.

TMKIWI - I like your take on the plates.  My budget appreciates it as well!  I have never replaced a clutch before and I was expecting to find some warn parts.  To my suprise all looked pretty good but wanted to reach out to you all and get some opinions.  Thanks

Technical / Clutch Plate Life Question - 2005 YZ 125

You checked both the fibre and metal plates?

Sachs - I checked both (metal/fiber).  Metal plates are not blued and lay flat.

Technical / Clutch Plate Life Question - 2005 YZ 125
« on: July 28, 2012, 04:22:15 AM »
I have owned a 2005 yz 125 for the past 6 months and recently decided to do the 'shift stopper fix'.  While I was inside the clutch I figured I would replace the clutch plates since they are the original plates and I had the bike open.

I measured the thickness of the plates and they were within spec (3mm), however the springs were out of spec.

New springs have been purchased but I am hesitant to pick up the new plates.  The bike seems to run fine but the pads on the clutch plates look glazed.

My question - Is there a general rule to replace clutch plates over time even if they are still within spec? Am I just looking for an excuse to spend money?

Thanks - dk

They have a link to this mag.  You can open it up and flip to roughly page 50 or so and select the page and it will zoom on each click.  Careful you only get 3 zooms.

Technical / YZ125 jetting questions.
« on: March 10, 2012, 05:03:14 AM »
Where are you in Cali?  I just bought a 2005 yz 125 and I had the same issues.  Bike ran good but would sputter and not run smooth at high rpms in the lower gears.  I did the top end and the overrev is back with no weird sputtering or hesitation.  My piston looked just like yours along with the power valve being gunked up.  Stock jetting.

My new problem is a slight bog or hesitation after landings.  I have not checked the float bowl height yet and i belive this is the problem.

General Two Stroke Talk / Rode a 2012 KX250F
« on: February 27, 2012, 03:17:17 AM »
I rode my buddies 450 a few years ago. I expected to be blown away by it, but it felt like I was riding a tractor.

Yes..i rode my buddies crf450 2 years ago and told him it felt like my dads 3blade john deer tractor that we would cut our grass with.

I slapped her together last night and went to Pala this morning.  New piston and cylinder.  I did a 12 min warm up lap keeping it under half throttle.  Brought it back to the pits for a cool down.  Took her back out and didnt hold back.  Running very strong and super happy!

Are those chips from the spark plug hole too? Or just oil? I can't tell.

Just oil - I did a double take when posting the pics and looked at the head and it was just oil.

Thanks for all the feedback.  I ended up picking up a new cylinder for $420!  :'(
I am thinking this was pre-mature after reading further comments since this could be a bigger problem.  If the head is wrapped I am just on borrowed time.  Here are some pics of the head.  The bike was used in the desert and I am thinking with all the carbon buildup on the exahust side of the cylinder and gunked up power valve that she got hot.

I was told that they never touched the top end and it looks stock but I was afraid that i would have to take this in.  Man.  I guess you get what you pay for.  Thanks for the reply!

Need Help! Questionable top end? Do I need to get this cylinder reconditioned? ? 2005 yz 125

I bought a 2005 yz 125 last week and I am currently in the middle of doing the top end.  I noticed that the top of the cylinder is starting to break down!  Please review the pic and let me know if this is normal for a 125 or do I need to get this thing reconditioned?

Thanks in advance!

Dave
