That RS3 is badass.  As you guys well know, I am a fan of the rotary valve.  Also, I'm curious about the specs on the motor in that car.  It's a two-stroke, obviously, but how big is it, and how much horsepower does it make?

One project I always thought would be fun is to make a go-kart with a 490 motor in it, with motorcycle-style controls.  That'd be a blast for screaming around the neighborhood.


Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.

Brochures and cards on those cards have been for sale on ebay for years, just search on Maico 500

The motor is water cooled and is a 452cc Heinkel 461-A-O 2 stroke.  It's a 4 speed with a top speed of 60 MPH and has 18 Horsepower.  I think it has 2 cylinders.

Okay, that's all I needed to hear.  Now I know that if I bought one of those, it'd be getting a 490 motor immediately!

(An inside joke I have going with some of my friends is "JETZ putting a 490 engine in everything.")

Did'nt Honda make a go-kart in the early eighties with a steering wheel that had a throttle and brake/clutch levers?.... ???

Yeah, they were kinda strange, first ones had a 250 2 stroke engine that could be tricked out pretty good. A friend of mine had one and it seemed to roll pretty easy, had to have wrist straps on the steering wheel to keep from losing an arm  :o

For a mess-around kart, I'd want the motorcycle controls simply because they'd be easy to set up with a dirt bike engine.  But if I were going after some serious performance, in all probability I'd want to get one of them snowmobile-engine-powered beasts with car controls like they had on Top Gear.  But for that kind of money, there are trillions of bikes that would be better for any kind of trail.  And when it comes to bombing down fire-roads, what's wrong with an old Dart Swinger?  Sure it's a four-stroke, but the damn thing only turns five grand, and they were in production for about five hundred years so you'd have a pretty cheap, easy-to-maintain, 180 horsepower redneck rally rig.  Drop in a nice seat with some good lateral support, a good seatbelt/harness and a motocross helmet and you'd be pretty well set as well as you would be with the kart (although you could also drive it to wherever you're going so there's a big convenience factor).
