im in the market for getting a tiddler bike soon. but i plan to race and a 125 makes it a little hard so i plan to get a bigger motor to make it easier on myself. So, heres my question: should i build a 144 out of a 125 or buy a purpose built KTM. a $7000 tag on a new one is steep so i wont get one unless i find a used one and im in no rush

You wouldn't go wrong with either of the following.
TM 144
Husky CR144
Not sure what the second hand market is like where you are but down here the resale on Husky's is terrible and you can pick them up cheap.
Nothing wrong with the bikes, it's just the "sheep" mentality and people like to stick with the norm.
And there is always the YZ with the athena kit

i picked up a 06 ktm 125sx in very good condition, although pretty dirty, for cheap. i'm really impressed with the power. it feels like it has more power across the board, than the 03 rm125 (144) that i had built by Eric Gorr. and the ktm supposedly has 50 hours on it.
i'm 205 lbs in street clothes.  it hauls me around just fine.

My fears of tm or husky's are the fact that getting parts for them is not easy!

The Husky 144 enduro is a 2011 model in the states,no word if there making a cr144 mx. I never heard anything about the cr125 Husky,no test in mags,never see any. I would be interested in a Husky if I didn,t have 2 cr125 Honda,s. One of my cr,s is a 04 with a 2mm stroker crank and 2mm overbore, alot quicker and faster than a KTM. When my 04 was decked,ported,40mm carb it would pull a 144 athena YZ,with a 30 lb. lighter on it. I would  just port and bore the carb on a 125,if I where to do it all over again.

Husky sells a 144 kit for the 125CR. I wasn't too impressed with it though. A stock YZ125 would perform better I think.
