Everyone always speaks of the HP numbers but id like to see a torque comparison between say a 2012 250sx and a new 450

There would not be much in it. 2-3ft/lbs.
Main difference is the curve on the 450 is flatter.
Yep and it's that flat curve that makes all the difference to lap times.

watch this video of RC on a 250 2 stroke. One of the first things he says when he gets off is how much grip the 4 strokes have and how far they have come

I know that a YZ 250 is down on HP vs the 450 but why everyone who tries to race a national on one thinks they have to tune it on the very ragged edge to compete.
You can't win if you don't finish.

This bike was bone stock. Not " tuned on the ragged edge". It was his own play bike and it had hours on it. Might have helped to put a fresh bore on it before the race but in the end it was just bad luck!
