I've split the cases on a KX 125, and a Honda 400Ex.  Neither time did I need a case splitter.  I just used a rubber mallet, and gently beat them into submission...  JK...  I don't recall really having any issues with the KX, and the 400Ex came apart after a few taps with the rubber mallet.

Use a brass/oak or nylon drift and gently tap the cases apart.Yamahas are never tight.

I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

I split a few older ones without a splitter. My old F11 practically fell apart after a tap or two. The KDX required a splitter, as did the kx. I just made one. Pretty simple.
