Technical / Piston Diagnosis

yes I've got a 2012 tm300en, fantastic bike but unfortunately I've had some issues from the start , first off I had a minor seize , I suspect the ring end gap may have been a bit tight from new as it was  under spec when it was removed after 50hrs but the bike ran fine didn't even notice it had locked up until  I took it apart and saw the damage , 2nd thing was I dusted it pretty good out riding in a big group ( I usually ride by myself so no dust) and it didn't feel right while riding after a couple hours and lost compression, found out later that the airbox seal is a little sus on some from the factory and during pre delivery the shop usually seals them with silicone from the inside but didn't do mine  ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley"> luckily I got away with just a hone and new piston and ring , it's been ok so far but i'll have to replace the barrel at some point as mine had a bit of plating missing at the top of the exhaust port when I did the first top end but I still haven't ridden another bike that's as good as the TM !

have you checked the tm's airbox is sealed properly , my first piston looked very similar to yours and it was caused by a s#@t seal job at the factory  ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley"> ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley"> ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley">

Are you replacing the cylinder as well ? looks like it may have been sucking in dust too, have you found what caused the failure or are you just assuming fatigue ?

i recently went from a crf250x to a tm300 and have gotta say that the 2t is a lot easier to get up any hill or through any big mud bog than my 4 stroke ever was , i always belived the 4 stroke was able to put the power down better in all situations but now i know i'd rather have my tm  or any 300 for that matter out in the bush , last week i went for a ride on some old trails that always tested my ability to the max on the honda ,hit up the same trail that included some real nasty rock climbs and wet slippery clay hills and the 300 made it feel easy

Unfortunately, that is not a good example. You are comparing apples to oranges. A CRF250X is about equivalent to a 125 2-stroke (enduro type, i.e KTM EXC) where as the 4-stroke equivalent of the TM300 is the 450F.

ok fair enough , the tm300 was able to climb up hills that i could never get close to getting up on my crf450x

The CRF250X has to be zung up hills. It really was gutless when you think about it. You'd have no such problem with the 450. That said, we have a hill on our MX track that the 250 out performs the 2-strokes. It is long and steep with loose dirt square edge step woops all the way to the top. And just to make it more difficult, there is a kink 1/2 way up. It is not hard in the sense that some people can't make it. It is hard with the "trying to go fast" in mind.

Mine is 2012, with just 4,5 hours. What is this mod for shimstack? Is there basic mod or do you mean personal adjusting?
First service will be done at 10h and by tm mechanic, have to ask him about over expanding bladder.
pretty sure you can't pre expand the bladder on the 12's as they don't have a bleed screw in the cartridge cap, from what i've been told the shim stack mod was just the removal of 1 shim in the comp stack and 5wt fork oil in the cartridge . The standard valving isn't to bad as long as you've got the right spring rates
