General Two Stroke Talk / Re: 2 vs 4
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:09:52 AM »
I'd be willing to bet on a plane drag, the 2 stroke woud beat the 450F.  I believe (I could be wrong) the 300 has more hp and less weight. That is all that matters in quarter mile time.

If drag racing was that simple it would be, but it isn't.
Ability to get the power down, low end and mid range grunt, gearing optomised for peak power then being above peak torque after gear changes, as well as top speed are all major factors.

While I would like to think a 300 2 stroke would beat a 450cc thumper, its certainly more complicated than a basic power vs weight scenario

I am by no means an expert, infact quite the opposite however in my experience fuel injections greatest assest is it's ability to "tame" wild engines. I don't mean mellowing the power rather assisting mid range and low end and tuning out any trophs.

By putting fuel injection combined with a programmable ignition on a rotary engine (and obesrving many others) improvments in top end grunt are had as well as the previously mentioned benefits.

When you consider the biggest issues with 2 stroke currently is that they aren't the most ridable engines and struggle to get powere down, any advantage that FI may give there would be a huge benefit. I don't understand why people seem to be obesssing over the hope of getting a bit more top end hp, the benefit of fuel injection (if it is set up well) is that you get maxmium top end while having improvemenst everywere else.

The problems with carbies is that they seem to be much more compromised than fuel injection, if you size and tune a motor for maximum hp (particularly a 2 stroke) it will suffer everywhere else.

Damn, us Aussie's are happy to pay over $5000 for an average one of these, if that was for sale in Aus it would easily got for double.

The guy should whack it on ebay, an Aussie will pick it up for sure.

Well then, I am surprised someone hasn't said it yet, but great job Charles!
I don't know whether these HGI kits are any good, if it is possible to get FI working on a performance 2 stroke or anything at all about the real world changes it will bring.
I'm very glad TSM is giving it a go though and very much looking forward to following the project with interest.

Would be fantastic to see some dyno graphs! of before and after.

The more I think about this the better it gets.
Given the Ecu can look after fueling and ignition why not use it to control the powervalve?
Wouldn't be too hard to rig up a solenoid which actuates the Pv here.
Surely with the ecu controlling all three variables here it will only add to the rideability and smoothness which is often missing from two stroke?

This is sensational news!
I'm sure there are many here like me who come back to the forum from time to time, crossing their fingers that the next "break through" will be unveiled.

If this works with real world improvements and is as cost effective as it seems, it should be very popular.
Excellent work HGT!

The only failure for the NSX was sales-and price. It supposedly went after the Porsche Carrera and generally equaled or bettered it but....it was almost $20,000 more. The japs have a hard time in this category. If you have the bucks to buy this kind of machinery does it sound more impressive to tell the boys at the polo club you just bought a new Porsche,Ferrari,Lambo...or a Honda?

you are probably right.
Interestingly, the series 6 (fd) Rx7 was similar performance wise to the Nsx, and thanks to a retail price which was less than half that of an Nsx, it ended up selling very well.

The Nsx was marketed ad too much of a super car and for that price really needed to be head and shoulders above it's euro competition which it wasn't.

For what's it's worth, I think they look sweet!

Technical / Re: Dyno tuning 2 strokes?
« on: August 04, 2011, 04:42:26 AM »
Cheers, I thought you'd be the guy in the know here.
I'm confused though, if an o2 sensor isn't used how can an effetive air/fuel ratio be found and thus an optimum tune?
Surely there's a more refined method than just doing a plug chop?

Technical / Dyno tuning 2 strokes?
« on: August 03, 2011, 01:05:37 AM »
I may be lucky enough to be able to get myself a chassis dyno, as it can be completely written off as a business expense and I have access to one cheaply.

Firstly, I am assuming a dyno designed for cars should be universal enough for bikes? ( I do realise there is such thing as a bike only dyno but that would be quite restrictive), however my main concern is about the oil burnt by 2 strokes.
I remember years ago having a rotary on a dyno, the owner complained a lot about it gummng up his o2 sensor, with a 2 stroke being a lot more oilythis issue could be a lot worse.

If anyone has had experiences running 2 strokes on dyno's and the use of o2 sensors with them Id appreciate any input

There could be a real market for parted out 250f's.
Existing owners of the 4 strokes are more often than not looking for replacement engines where as guys like us would love a nice developed modern chassis to slot a real motor in!

Technical / Re: Bleeding a hydraulic clutch?

Thanks guys, I followed the instructions and got new fluid through the whole system very easily.
Undoing the connection to the master did help, once that flowed through it was a cinch.

Technical / Bleeding a hydraulic clutch?
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:15:31 AM »
Just threw in a new top end on my Tm 125 the other day, never having done it on this bike the job still only took half a day all up.
Really is a joy to work on, radiators were left on and thanks to the intake ports going into the bottom end, the carby and reed valve was left in tact, all of which makes the job a lot easier.

The clutch has always felt a bit spongy so while there I thought Id change all the fluid.
First thing I noticed was the fluid was like mud so I took off the hydraulic line, got all fluid out of the master cylinder and slave (where the bleed nipple attachs) and blew out all the gunk with compressed air.

All went well until i tried to get lever pressure. Topping up the master cylinder it seems like no fluid is being  pumped through. Now, my first thought is that the master cylinder is stuffed but further reading suggests filling from the bottom while using a syringe to pump fluid in is necessary.

I will try this method but I'm not convinced, if anyone has any tips on doing hydraulic clutches it would be appreciated.

My XR was a bulletproof mountain goat. It's only downfall was the front forks. If you happened to cross a rut they'd follow it like it was locked there and would deflect something fierce. That was fixed with an SRC fork brace. It was the most improvement I've ever gotten from any part I've put on any bike in my life.Highly recommended for any XR owner. The difference is unbelievable.
I still think the 300 would be an excellent choice for what you're looking for-good for occasional users and good for you.

any idea where to pick up one of those braces?
