MXA seems contradictory then

Which is pretty much MXA's norm. If I had a big pile of cash and was going to build the ultimate CR250R I would go with the 00/01 engine with a keihin carb for a couple of reasons. The powervalve design is simpler and non-electronic (one more thing to go wrong). The cylinder reed design was working quite well and was at the peak of its long development curve. All in all the engine has fewer parts to break or fail and there are a lot of proven performance mods and it makes very nice power by even todays standards.

I am using a bolt on modified 06 motor and like it a lot but if the electronics on this bike ever take a dump I will be looking at picking up an 00/01 motor

there is a question in the newest mxa about the 01 vs 07 cr engine...which one would they use if money wasnt issue and they went with the 07....it was in the ask the expert section...they didnt elaborate too much, but i guess a good builder can make the 07 better than the 01....

Without a doubt it has more potential, but the 01 was better off the shoowroom floor.
How do you know this? Have you owned both or tuned either?

Without a doubt was poor wording. I've heard almost everyone say that the 01 was better off the showroom floor so I'm just reiterating.

Here is the last few Honda Cr250R engines in a nutshell

2000- Considered the best CR engine by some, broad usable power in a very stiff and unforgiving frame, I rode several of the 2000/2001 and liked the '96 steel framed CR's better.

2001- Same engine but Honda makes the first in a series of blunders with the CR and swaps the Keihin carb for a Mikuni. Honda will stick with the Mikuni, both without and with a TPS for the rest of the CR production run. The Mikuni carb is the weak link in my 06 for sure, Honda must of had a warehouse full of these.

2002-04- First year of the case reed design and all new electronic powervalve and much better alloy frame. The bike has good HP numbers but never gets that nice low end bark back. Minor engine changes frm 2002-2004. All development money is going into 4 strokes after the CRF rolls out in 2002.

2005-2007 New cylinder and one piece powervavle design, much better sealing than old two piece design, Mikuni gets YPS and despite a bunch of changes the motor is at its peak of development and still doesn't have any low end.

The 2005-07 engine is the most technologically advanced 2 stroke engine Honda has ever put in a motocross bike. Is it the best? Who knows. It certainly has a lot of potential for improvement in any case as countless builders both in the cart and motocross world have proven.

MXA was asked about the 01 vs the 07 CR and the gist of their reply is that although they liked the 01 engine better (AKA Service Honda) they would race the latest version (07) beacuse of its superior frame, handling, ans suspension and the bike is a newer design. They also mentioned the Service Honda as being the best of all worlds with a 01 engine in an even newer late model CRF frame and suspension.

The 84 thru 01 Honda CR 250 engines were piston port reed induction and the 02 and up were case reed induction. I personally prefer piston port reed induction engines and my Maicos have a silky smooth broad responsive spread of power that I have not found in any case reed engine and I've ridden everything from TM to Gas Gas. Technically a case reed engine is, I think, superior but out in the real world I found the piston port better.

Nothing exemplifies this better then the early 90's (and the 00/01) Honda CR250's, very, very fast yet easy to ride. Now I'm being somewhat hypocritical as I haven't ridden the very latest KTM's for example, but, to date I'll stick with the piston ports. ;D

Hondas are always near and dear to my heart...that is THE nicest non-factory Honda I've ever seen,  and it even ranks pretty close to some of the old RC Hondas

I'm curious about motor mods and what kind of carb you are running?
