General Two Stroke Talk / Re: 175

It seems like 200cc was settled on as the ideal small bore size for off road.

The IT175 became the 200, the KDX200 was a great off road machine. KTM made a 200 until recently and by all reports was a great off road bike.

Beta just released a 200rr even.

Just an observation.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be trained by a group of legends of the sport?

Wonder no more because I am going to tell you: Epic, in every way! It ranked near the top of all time fun days on a motorcycle in my 41 years of riding.

This last weekend (August 16-18) was the annual NW Challenge vintage motocross race at Washougal. As part of that my friend Chris who is the promoter for this race brought in 4 huge names from back in the day (Broc Glover, David Baily, Warren Reid, Scott Burnworth) along with the track owner/operator and former factory pro Ryan Huffman and local fast guy, National pro and regular instructor Tommy Weeck.

The class was limited to 50 riders and included all skill levels and all age ranges. We were broken up into 3 groups based on our own assessment of our skill levels and the 6 instructors paired off to handle specific skills and sections of the track.

I have said for many years now that if I could afford to rent out Washougal for a day I would spend most of my time just riding up Horsepower hill and jumping off the Ski Jump. I got my wish on Friday!  My group rode that section of the track for about an hour straight. Up the hill, jump down the hill, go through the switchbacks at the bottom where Tommy Weeck and Ryan Huffman were watching, evaluating and correcting everyone's cornering technique, then exit the track ride back around to the base of Horsepower hill and go again!

Tommy was able to correct my riding position in the corners which I have apparently had completely wrong for the last 40+ years because my ability to make the bike go where I want it to was improved by an order of magnitude with just a few minutes of help.

If that had been the end of the day I would have felt like I got every penny of the $150 this class cost in value and left with a huge smile on my face.

But instead we rotated to the next section on the lower portion of the track, where THE David Bailey and Broc Glover further refined my cornering technique and body position!  David Bailey even told me I had "Good Skills", I am thinking about having that printed on the back of my jersey!  ;D

After a short break to get some water and eat a little bit the final section for me was starts with Scott Burnworth and Warren Reid. My starting technique is reasonably solid but I still gained some valuable refinements from them nonetheless.

We also got to ride a bunch of free laps before and after the instruction. That really helped my confidence on that track.

The next two days were a full schedule of races. I raced one class on both days and for the first time ever on that track I actually felt like I rode to my potential.

Now I just need some more practice time to fully cement what they taught me.

It was an all time epic weekend.

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: Jetting question on two stroke quad
« Last post by eprovenzano on August 20, 2019, 06:02:00 PM »
I finally got the jetting right... YEA!!!!

I kept thinking about the jetting... when I got the quad the main seal was leaking, which i fixed. so it was always running rich. I thought before I order new jets, to do a test... I pulled off the air box and took it around the house... it was a little rich on the bottom, but open her up and holy cow she will move....  the air box is really restrictive.

Previously I had purchased a carb rebuild kit, it came with "stock" jets... I knew the main that came with the kit was smaller than the one in the carb (of course its not marked with a size, but based on a visual test it's smaller). I know I should only make one jetting change at a time, but I knew I was too rich and needed to address it...  So i pulled the carb, swapped MJ's and moved the clip up one notch... it now starts it’s soon as you touch the starter button.. and best of all it runs like scalded dog.. it's pretty fast for an old girl

I kept thinking it was too lean...  when all along it was too rich.  I think during it's lifetime, as the main seal began to leak, it was rejetted richer to accommodate the extra air.  Well those problems have been solved and it runs as it should...  I'll be on it this weekend, reopening some single track...  yes that is why I have it...  ;D  At least I bought a quad that's a 2 stroke

I'm starting to rethink the issue...  I'm going to pull the air box and see if more air changes the performance.  If it does, then the MJ is too large, and I need to go smaller...

General Two Stroke Talk / Jetting question on two stroke quad
« Last post by eprovenzano on August 19, 2019, 09:45:55 AM »
Not a MX question, but a two stroke jetting question on my quad

Ok guys... I've been fighting bad jetting on my 2000 Polaris Xplorer 400 since I got this machine. it on stock jetting... Yes it runs ok... but there are days want to set it on fire... It starts and idles perfectly every time (no choke needed, even when cold) without fail... so I'll agree the PJ is running slightly rich. Its the transition above idle that's killing me... at times it blubbers, coughs, chokes, but other times, it will get into the mid range (1/2 throttle) and then blubber... It will run in the mid range all day if you keep it below 1/2 throttle. You cannot get into a clean upper range. Sitting in neutral, you can open the throttle all the way, and it revs about 1/2 of where I think it should go. It doesn't completely rev out as a two stroke should, and it's worse with a load on the motor.

Changes I've made... I've leaned out the clip, 3rd to 2nd notch.. (3rd is where it was when I got the machine) runs better, but not good enough for me... If I move the clip to the top notch, the idle seems better, (could be my imagination) but then it will not rev out at all... pulled the MJ and found it's a 210. Cannot find a marking on the needle or PJ. I'm ok with the PJ for now...

I think I'm going to order jets larger than the current 210, (220 and 230). My semi educated guess as to what is happening... with the rich bottom end, its allowing the motor to get into the mid range, but the main jet is too small not allowing it to rev out... My fix is moving the clip to the top notch (leaning out the lower end), and swapping out the current 210 MJ for with a 220, or 230 to allow the carb to get more fuel and hopefully into the upper RPM range.

Thoughts?

Steel I guess. Just that I got some intetest from a guy in the US wanting a 175 size engine for an offroad application. He seems keen on my Rotary Valve technology with the sliding Gibs and the tpi. I'm Looking at building a prototype for him, two in fact. But until I see money it's just talk but it's intetesting to know other peoples opinions. I'm keen on a 175 myself.
