I've been pretty happy with the stock head pipe on my '01 yz125.

My brother put a PC platinum on his 2000 yz125, and we noticed very little difference.  If anything it seemed to rob a bit of the bottom power to add to the top end. ....   but it's barely noticeable.

a 2000 yz125 is a wonderful model bike, lots of fun, neutral handling.  It should treat you well.

Technical / yz 125 top end rebuild question

I've never found any burrs on Millennium's work to remove, and I check (recommend for you to do the same)

I do clean the cylinder thouroughly with soap and water then coat the bore with fresh oil prior to assembly.

I recommend to keep a journal of exactly what your lower, mid and upper ring gaps are during assembly.  Then when you tear down for inspection later, you have a good idea of how much wear you are seeing, and where it is.

Very nice.  I'm really looking forward to seeing your results, although it will be on the net/tv and not in person.

Those bikes should definitely turn some heads.

Technical / yz 125 top end rebuild question

You'll notice that where the cylinder is plated, the color is darker than the rest of the cylinder.  The aluminum undeneath will be a bit lighter.

Look at the exhaust bridge, and just below the exhaust port on that yz as this is the first place that will break through if the plating is worn through.  Since the aluminum is softer, it will "smear" in vertical lines up and down the cylinder.

The one thing to be a little careful with is that sometimes the piston skirt can leave some aluminum on the cylinder, in this case, the lighter colored areas will be raised up from the the plated surface rather than gouged out.  I recommend using a dullened dental pick to "feel" the surface a little.

Regarding plating shops, I've only sent my stuff to Millennium Technologies in Plymouth, Wi.

I honestly don't know that they are any better than any other shop out there, but I've been happy and I like to stick with what I personally know works.

yz125 has a plated cylinder.  If the plating is worn enough for a bigger piston, then you'd need to replate anyway.

In other words, stick with the 54 mm piston.  If your ring gap is wrong with new piston, or you have any bare aluminum showing through, or deep grooves, you'll want to send it out for replating.

There are some people who will get into the A,B,C piston sizing where you can get a 54.01 mm piston, etc. ...  and there is some logic to this, but I've never bothered, and never had an issue.

Charles, thanks for the info.  That gives me a much better picture of what your weekend is like.

So, when you are successful at generating points for a rider, that rider will be able to practice/qualify with that 'A' group.  (also means that Marshal will qualify with the 'A' group for Unadilla since I know he got points at Southwick)  Very cool.

I think the post above is a nice preview of the upcoming "behind the scenes" article we've been promised.

I want to add in that I am in full support of the TSM effort as well.

I have given a bit of $$ here and there and bought the Spazztic team shirts, but kinda wondering if there is another way to help support the team...    in other words, what can the TSM community to to help the team?

100K for a half season is an awful lot of scratch.  Is there a business plan to eventually make $$ or be paid back from this effort?  Just wondering how that actually works....    I can't imagine Charles can afford to hemmorage $$ like this on a continual basis, so I'm a little curious how the team is going to survive going forward.

Best of luck in Canada, at Millville and looking forward to seeing the team back in force at Unadilla!

Technical / yz 125 bogging low end

good avice so far on this thread.

One thing I can add as your problem sounds like one I had on my '01 yz125 is that you may have a fuel leak past your choke plunger.  On that Mikuni carb, the choke isn't really a choke as much as an additonal passage to dump extra fuel in the motor.  Made my jetting really erratic on the bottom, didn't seem to affect higher revs much.

It was really hard to narrow this down, and when I pulled it out, there really wasn't a ton of wear...  I just randomly tried one out of another bike and problem was fixed.  Less than $10 for a new part.

wear after 5 hours sounds crazy...

Not to insult, but are you oiling your air filters?  (I have a couple buddy's who didn't realize this was necessary...  I don't recommend buying their used stuff).  If so, what oil are you using and are you using enough?

2nd, what kind of oil are you running in your fuel....  and at what ratio?

Pictures of the worn out parts will help a lot too, but I'm not the first to point that out.

Open Forum / 4 STROKES IS THE BEST!!! ... Right?
« on: July 07, 2013, 05:55:20 PM »
This is less about 4 strokes, and more about a typical quad rider...  no helmet, no protective gear, and simply a dumb arse.
How often do you see a 2 stroke quad these days?

Any time I open the door to my shed  ;-)

I have to say that guy's not a "typical" quad rider...   most don't have the commitment for that.
not sure what the intended outcome was there.

I have a very similar kit to this installed on my trx250R quad.  I've been very happy with it and find that the blade PV works much better than the non-pv that is OEM on that model quad.  The porting is also a huge advancement from what was OEM on my 1986 machine.

In my bikes, I've been WAY happier with the factory powervalve systems.... and with the nikasil bore. ....   and I don't see anywhere near the potential for "modernizing" with a different top end.

I kinda think this would be a step backwards in a modern bike....  but I'd love to hear from someone who gets one of these cylinders.
