Technical / 2001 yz125 riddle
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:14:55 AM »
To be clear, this isn't a thread of me asking for advice, since I have figured out the issue (and I will tell. ..  after a few guesses for fun). ..   just curious if anyone would actually guess the problem with my 01 yz125.

When I went to test ride the bike, I had some trouble getting the bike to start.  The owner indicated that I shouldn't crack the throttle AT ALL during the kick stroke (I have a habit of blipping the throttle just a little bit near the bottom of the kick.)

With his advice, it started and blipping the throttle would keep it running.  I took it for the test ride and it SCREAMED down the street, but bogged and died when I let it get back near idle.  I figured that the jetting was off and I'd get it straightened out once I got the bike home.

At home, I'm adjusting the air fuel screw and the pilot jet. ..  I end up chainging the pilot jet from a 25 to a 27.5 to a 30 to a 35, and there's really no noticeable difference. ..  on any of these jets it would run the closest to correct with the air fuel screw turned almost all the way in.

I went through the electric system and checked everything out. .  all measured within spec.

Thinking that the pilot circuit could be plugged, I did a complete disassembly on the carb and cleaned that circuit out fully.  No change. The bike still requires the same starting procedure and acts very lean from idle to mid-throttle, but runs great above that.

Riding Spots / Northern Illinois Riders
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:21:07 AM »
Anybody else on here from N. Illinois or S. Wisconsin?

I live near Rockford, IL and am always looking for places to ride (offroad that is. .  I'm not much of a jumper so I avoid the MX tracks). ..   though I must not be very good at it since I pretty much have to trailer up and drive to Michigan to hit decent single track trails.

I have raced my trx250R two-stroke quad (and am contemplating entering with my RM250 bike) in the WFO hare scramble series run out of the quad cities.    www.wfopromotions.com   their tracks are mostly farmer's land that gets run for a harescramble once or twice per year, but isn't rode on otherwise.  Tons of fun!!

Non-Moto / Any trx250R fans on here?

I'm new to this forum, so think I'll start with a small introduction.

I've been an 3 and 4 wheeler rider for the past 24 years.  I've done some harescramble racing been successful enough at it.

I was a die hard 3wheeler guy until my brother bought a trx250R in 1992.  He still has the same quad (1986 model) and I have my own.  The ATV world has been without race-worthy new 2-stroke quads since 1989, last year of the trx250R.

Anyway, my love of the two-stroke powerplant in that machine eventually led me to yearn for something else with a two stoke. ....  something newer.  . ..  two years ago I bought a 2003 RM250 and absolutely love it. ..  since then I bought into another (2004) RM250 and recently picked up a 2000 yz125.  The trx250r is now relegated to family trail riding duty as any time I have a choice, I've been swinging a leg over the bike instead.

Anyway, over the years I have gathered quite a bit of knowledge about the trx250R model, and I'm always up for a conversation about them . ..
